Jesse Winker 2019 Outlook: Emerging On-Base Monster
6 years agoPrior to season-ending shoulder surgery in 2018, Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jesse Winker was creating some buzz in the fantasy community. Expected to be fully healthy for Spring Training, he once again demands attention. Winker’s primary skillset is making contact and getting on base. Across two part-time big league campaigns and 471 plate appearances, he holds an excellent 0.9 BB/K ratio. His minor league resume validates the on-base prowess. While he’s yet to develop sustainable pop, Winker's 95.4 MPH FB/LD exit velocity last season was comparable to renowned sluggers Cody Bellinger and Kyle Schwarber. The .371 wOBA and 130 wRC+ borderlines great. He’s someone to take seriously. Winker’s defense could be considered a liability, but the Reds are currently rostering just four outfielders heading into Spring Training. Considering one is geriatric Matt Kemp, Winker will get his chances. The midseason injury last year likely wiped his promising start from memory (.836 OPS, seven homers, 81 runs+RBI) and Winker enters 2019 as the 54th-ranked outfielder in fantasy with an overall ADP of 203. With his seemingly elite plate discipline, Winker is positioned to be a third outfielder at a bargain. Assuming at least 500 plate appearances, the 25-year-old could flirt with 20 dingers, 150 R+RBI while testing a .300 average. Fantasy baseball is often about capitalizing on opportunities, grabbing Winker at his asking price is one of those moments.
