James Agnew Converting To Wide Receiver
5 years agoDetroit Lions cornerback James Agnew has been the team's regular kick and punt returner since he entered the league in 2017, has seen time as a gadget running back and offensive weapon and has played as a backup cornerback and on special teams. But the Lions are hoping to make him a wide receiver full time when training camp starts this summer. Agnew has been attending virtual meetings with the receivers and cornerbacks this spring, but the Lions plan to transition him exclusively to offense when everyone returns to the field. He actually sat in on late-season receiver meetings last year because of injuries to Marvin Jones Jr. and Marvin Hall. Agnew played 16 total offensive snaps last season, but he should see much more time with the offense in 2020 as receiver depth behind Kenny Golladay, Danny Amendola, Jones, Hall and rookie Quintez Cephus. Even with the position switch, he'll likely be on the roster bubble and will be competing with Hall, Geremy Davis and Geronimo Allison for the final one or two spots.
