Rookie goaltender Ilya Samsonov recorded the first shutout of his young career and has actually outplayed the veteran Braden Holtby this season. In 17 games, Samsonov features a .925 save percentage and 2.11 goals-against average, while Holtby is at .899 and 3.02 in 32 games. The rookie netminder has won his last four starts and has 13 wins on the season. Alex Ovechkin is now up to 28 goals on the year as the 34-year-old sniper continues to show no signs of slowing down. He has six goals and nine total points in his last 10 games as he chases a second straight 50-goal season. For the Hurricanes, Dougie Hamilton had five shots on net and four penalty minutes, while Teuvo Teravainen fired four shots.
