Giants Unlikely To Take QB At No. 2 Overall
7 years agoIt appears unlikely that the New York Giants will draft a quarterback second overall. By the end of their process of evaluating the top QB prospects in the draft class, the body of work of Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen is not commensurate with what the Giants require the No. 2 pick to be. New York sees Penn State running back Saquon Barkley as a near-perfect prospect, and they think he's a better play than Ezekiel Elliott, who went fourth overall to the Cowboys in 2016. North Carolina State defensive end Bradley Chubb is also in the mix at No. 2, but the Giants will not take Quenton Nelson with the second pick. “I don’t think Dave will take a quarterback,’’ a national scout said. “I don’t see it. I could see Chubb putting on that gold jacket. I could see Nelson putting on that gold jacket. Barkley, no question. If you have a crystal ball and say, ‘This guy is gonna be an annual All-Pro and make it to the Hall of Fame,’ Barkley would be the No. 1 guy.’’ That means the G-Men will have to find a potential successor to Eli Manning later in the draft. Davis Webb could still remain in the team's plans for the future, too. Barkley could immediately become a three-down back in his rookie year, despite the team signing Jonathan Stewart in free agency.
