Could Patriots Use A QB Platoon With Cam Newton?
4 years agoThere is a lingering question in New England Patriots training camp as to whether head coach Bill Belichick will use a quarterback platoon to begin the season, with repetitions split evenly among Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer in practice this week. It's clear that Newton is running third in terms of comfort level with the system. Belichick might like the idea of making the opposing defense prepare for two quarterbacks with different styles of play. With no preseason games this year, the Patriots may use September to get a better feel for their roster, including the QB position. It might also appeal to New England in order to preserve Newton's health, as he's coming off foot and shoulder injuries in recent seasons. The possibility that Stidham sees repetitions in the regular season as they try to get a ready on his long-term future doesn't bode well for Newton's overall fantasy value as a QB2. Belichick also said this week that Newton is still trying to catch up to the specifics of the Patriots system, but it's not a surprise since he's been with the team for only seven weeks.
