Cardinals Acquire Prospect Matthew Liberatore
5 years agoThe St. Louis Cardinals acquired pitching prospect Matthew Liberatore from the Rays on Thursday, according to sources familiar with the deal. It's part of a trade expected to send major league pieces back to Tampa, who has been searching for outfield bats. Liberatore, 20, is a left-handed starter that was ranked as Tampa's No. 4 prospect and No. 41 overall in baseball by MLB Pipeline. The No. 4 ranked southpaw prospect went 6-2 with a 3.10 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 76 K's in 78 1/3 innings over 15 starts and one relief outing for Single-A Bowling Green in 2019. The first-round pick in 2018 is still developing and might need another year or two before he's seen in the big leagues, but the Cardinals have a fine left-handed prospect on their hands.
