Cam Newton Still The Patriots Starter
4 years agoThe New England Patriots took Alabama quarterback Mac Jones at No. 15 overall in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft on Thursday night -- the first QB drafted by head coach Bill Belichick in the first round -- but Belichick said that Cam Newton is "our quarterback" and that Jones and Jarrett Stidham would have to challenge and compete with the veteran. Jones is an excellent fit for Belichick's offense as more of a pocket passer, but he first needs to learn the offense and prove himself. Newton, 31, didn't look all that great in his first year in New England, but he did set a franchise record with 12 rushing touchdowns. However, he only threw for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Unless he steps it up in the passing game in his second year with the Pats, there's a chance that Jones could eventually take over in 2021 if he's ready.
