Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Brandon Birdsell (elbow) will undergo season-ending elbow surgery after just four starts at Triple-A this season. The Cubs' ninth-ranked prospect got a late start to the season because of a shoulder injury, coming off the injured list in mid-July and pitching to a 3.38 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and a 12.5 percent K-BB% in 18 2/3 innings of work. The 25-year-old has a lengthy injury history, although he's been healthy the last couple of years, and this latest injury will delay his major league debut until at least 2026 at the earliest. An estimated return timetable will be provided once the surgery has been completed. The 25-year-old was named the Cubs' 2024 Minor League Pitcher of the Year and has well-above-average control, so there is still solid real-life and fantasy potential in that arm.--Jarod RuppRead More News
