Baker Mayfield To Avoid Surgery
2 years agoCarolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield (ankle) received second opinions on his high-ankle sprain that confirmed he's not dealing with major damage and no surgery is needed, according to sources. Mayfield will not go on Injured Reserve as of now, leaving open the possibility that he could return within four games. Sam Darnold (ankle) isn't ready to come off Injured Reserve with an ankle injury of his own, so it will be P.J. Walker starting under center for the Panthers in the first game without head coach Matt Rhule in Week 6 against the Los Angeles Rams. Walker will be making just his third NFL start, so all of Carolina's offensive weapons should be downgraded by fantasy managers. Mayfield could be facing competition from Darnold for the starting job once he's ready to return from his high-ankle sprain.
