Alex Wood To Follow Up On Breakthrough
7 years agoAlex Wood had a breakout season in 2017 that didn’t quite convince some people who have followed his career. The crafty left-hander has a history of injuries and joined the Dodgers as a bullpen piece when he came over from the Braves via trade in 2015. Wood unloaded nearly a strikeout per inning in 2017 (151 K in 152 IP) and walked batters at a career-low rate (2.25 BB per 9 innings). He started the season strongly but faded down the stretch, losing not only velocity but control. This isn’t surprising given that he returned to starting after a year of injuries as a reliever. He more than doubed his innings pitched from 60 in 2016 to 152 in 2017, but did just turn 27. His poise and perfectionism is part of why Dave Roberts trusts him. If his control is for real, we could be looking at someone with a top twenty SP upside.
