ANALYSIS: Los Angeles Chargers rookie running back Omarion Hampton has seen his fantasy stock soar during the preseason. While many expected him to operate in a timeshare with veteran Najee Harris, who the Chargers signed to a one-year deal in the offseason, Hampton has operated as the clear RB1 throughout most of the preseason.
In the offseason, Harris suffered an eye injury during a fireworks incident that kept him sidelined for nearly two months of action. While Harris recently returned to practice, it is worth noting that Hampton played with the first team during the entirety of training camp, so this should not put him in much danger of losing touches.
Hampton led the ACC in rushing yards during each of the past two seasons and posted a career-best 1,660 yards during his final campaign in 2024 with UNC.
While the veteran Harris is expected to have a role in the offense, given the time he missed, that role is not anticipated to be overly significant.
While Hampton does have a tougher matchup in Week 1, facing the Kansas City Chiefs, there is a strong possibility that the majority of opportunities in the backfield are in the rookie season. He is worth starting as an RB2 with upside in all fantasy formats in the opening week.
