Kevin Huerter is worth considering as a fantasy basketball waiver wire pickup heading into Week 9 of the NBA season.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 14+ Team Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 41% of leagues
ANALYSIS: The Red Mamba keeps doing it, folks. Kevin Huerter has been forced into a do-or-die role with multiple Hawks banged up to start the year, and he's delivering spicy stuff with gusto so far this season. It's already been a full month of starts for Huerter (13 straight getting back to Nov. 14) through Friday, and all he's doing is playing fantastic basketball as Atlanta has gone from a putrid 4-9 record prior to Huerter starts to an even 13-13 (9-4) since Kev hit the starting five. Not bad.
Huerter is playing a "low" 28 MPG on the year, but since becoming a starter that mark has gone all the way up to 31 MPG and an even higher/ridiculous 35 MPG in the past couple of weeks (back to Nov. 27, six games played). In the five games he's played this month, Huerter has been good for nearly a 17-3-3 nightly line, he's hit 2+ triples in all of those matches, and he's got a couple of 5- and 7-trey nights since last Sunday (Dec. 5).
While not a true contributor in most statistical categories, Huerter is a bona fide shooter with high percentages on all sorts of shots. The freebies come at low volume (just 0.5 FTA per game this season), but Huerter is attempting some healthy 9 FGA for someone with first-unit duties, and he's hitting all of his shots from the field at 46%, including both two- and three-pointers. He's raised that mark to an impossible 55.2% in December while attempting a season-high 11.6 FGA in that span. Land Huerter before other fantasy GMs catch up with his exploits, folks.
