Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t have an ideal 2023 season. The veteran quarterback signed a three-year deal with the Raiders during the 2023 offseason, replacing Derek Carr as the team’s starting quarterback.
However, he only started six games, totaling 1,205 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Las Vegas benched the veteran quarterback for Aidan O’Connell after firing former head coach Josh McDaniels. Garoppolo was once considered a franchise-caliber quarterback when with the San Francisco 49ers.
Unfortunately, he has struggled to stay healthy in his career, playing an entire season only once. The veteran has already been benched for a younger quarterback multiple times.

Jimmy Garoppolo Suspended Two Games
The NFL announced that Garoppolo is suspended two games for violating the league’s Performance Enhancing Substance Policy. His violation is related to using prescribed medication without having a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption.
While he wasn’t expected to start Week 1 of the 2024 season, Garoppolo will now miss the first two games because of this suspension. However, where will the veteran call home next year?
What’s Next For Jimmy Garoppolo?
Las Vegas isn’t expected to bring Garoppolo back in 2024. The Raiders are reportedly in the mix to land Russell Wilson if the veteran is released this offseason. They are also a team that could trade up during the NFL Draft for a quarterback.
The Raiders can now release Garoppolo and save significant money because of the suspension. They will likely make the move official sometime over the next few days.
Where the veteran will play next year is to be determined. His days as a starting quarterback are over. However, he is an appealing backup option. There were over 60 starting quarterbacks in 2023, meaning teams should prioritize securing a top-level backup this offseason.
Garoppolo will have suitors despite the two-game suspension. He could return to the New England Patriots as a backup to whichever quarterback they select with the third-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Another potential landing spot is the New York Giants.
Head coach Brian Daboll was with the Patriots from 2013-2016, spending three years with the veteran quarterback. Daniel Jones is coming off a torn ACL and has struggled with injuries in his career.
