Veteran running back Kareem Hunt saw his role diminish throughout the season, averaging 11.4 carries per game over the first five games but just 4.2 carries per game over the last five.

Hunt has succeeded in the league due to his breakaway speed, which helped him finish as the RB3 overall in his rookie season in Kansas City. He was released by the Chiefs after facing legal troubles in 2018 but returned to action in 2019 with the Cleveland Browns.

Hunt formed a dangerous one-two punch with Nick Chubb from 2019-2021, but his role depreciated in 2022 as Chubb took a front seat in the backfield. Where will Hunt play in 2023?

Is Kareem Hunt A Free Agent?

Following his disappointing 2022 season, Kareem Hunt finds himself on the free agent market. Hunt carried the ball 123 times for 468 yards and three touchdowns, averaging a career-low 3.8 yards per carry. He added 35 receptions for 210 yards and a score through the air.

Cleveland reporter Terry Pluto reported that the Browns think Hunt’s speed is “slipping,” and stated that they will not be resigning him.

He also mentioned that Hunt has gotten zero attention on the free agency front and that he would be “lucky” to sign a 1-year, $4 million deal.

Which Team Will Sign Kareem Hunt?

As it stands right now, no team is interested in Hunt. With the NFL Draft in three weeks, teams will address the running back position and may then turn to the free agent crop that includes a trio of aging stars in Hunt, Ezekiel Elliott, and Leonard Fournette.

The reality of the situation is that Hunt may not get another opportunity in the league until a team faces injuries at the position. We have seen former stars like Chris Johnson and Adrian Peterson step in and produce in a role like this on the back nine of their careers, so even if Hunt is not rostered going into the season we still likely have not seen the last of him on the football field.

While it may take some time for Hunt to get another opportunity, some teams lacking depth that could take a swing at him post-draft if they do not address the position include the Dallas Cowboys, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Cincinnati Bengals.
