Tony Pollard is a fantasy football waiver wire pickup option for running backs. Target him as a free agent add off waivers for Week 3 of the 2021 NFL season.

ANALYSIS: There is only one thing separating Tony Pollard from playing the RB1 role for the Cowboys: Ezekiel Elliott--the contract, not the player. Was it not because of his absolutely monstrous deal, Dallas will be more than happy starting and handing most of the workload to Pollard over Zeke, at least if we judge by the first couple of games played this season.
Pollard is the best of insurance plays out there at the RB position, perhaps on par with Alexander Mattison as the backup to Dalvin Cook. The thing is, Pollard is already a viable fantasy player to roster even in his current RB2 role. Zeke's 23.6 PPR points over two games are lower than Pollard's 31.3 in the same span. Pollard is averaging 1.31 PPR/Touch compared to Elliott's 0.71-mark (Zeke, by the way, has yet to have a 1.0+ PPR/Touch game this season).
While Elliott has gotten 31 opportunities to Pollard's 23, the latter has outscored the former in both games played through Sunday. Yet Dallas, paying Zeke tons of cazh as it is, is just forced to put their underperforming RB1 on the field in 70%+ of the offensive snaps compared to Pollard's 25-to-35% snap share. Yikes. Pollard will keep commanding some 35% of the touches among Cowboys rushers in what will most probably end being a 60/40 split that should actually be a 40/60 one if the Cowboys were actually into, you know, winning at the game of football. Pollard is a borderline FLEX in his current role with upside for much more (RB2) if Dallas comes to its senses at some point (hard to see that happening) or Zeke gets injured and misses time (not so probable).
