Jose Altuve "Super Focused" As Camp Opens
4 years agoHouston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve has already shown teammates in the first week of camp that he is determined to have a bounce-back season in 2021. Altuve endured a dismal shortened season last year, hitting a paltry .219 with only 18 runs batted in through 48 games. The 30-year-old has bounced back from injuries and slumps in the past, but advanced stats paint a different, more skeptical picture. The former MVP's strikeout rate has jumped from 13.2 percent in 2018 to 18.6 percent in 2020. His chase rate also has gone in the wrong direction, rising from 30 percent in 2019 to 35.2 percent last season. All of this points to a player that could be overvalued in upcoming drafts. Altuve still possesses fantasy appeal in standard leagues, but fantasy managers banking on past numbers may be in for a rude awakening. Altuve, to his credit, has been lauded by teammates through the first week of camp and appears to be dead-set on trying to defy his currently declining offensive trends.
