He saw just 16 shots but Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzlikins was perfect as Columbus shut out the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 on Friday night. It was his fifth shutout in the past eight games and he now has a sparkling .930 SV% and 2.20 GAA on the season. Defenseman Zach Werenski scored the winning goal. His 17 goals from the blue line lead all NHL defensemen and also set a new team record. Boone Jenner scored an empty-net goal, which was the first time he’s found the back of the net in 15 games. Gustav Nyquist added a helper, which gave him four points over his past five games. For Detroit, Jimmy Howard turned aside 42 of 43 shots in the lopsided loss. It’s been a dismal season for the netminder, whose GAA is just a hair below 4.00 and his record sits at 2-21. --Marc Hulet - RotoBaller
