Derrius Guice Shows Pass-Catching Ability
5 years agoWashington Redskins running back Derrius Guice stood out in practice on Thursday with a couple of big plays in the receiving game, according to an NBCSports.com report. Both plays resulted in long gains, and one of them came with Guice motioning from the backfield into a receiver position prior to the snap. The report mentions that head coach Jay Gruden noted Guice is "catching the ball very well." Should Guice continue to flash his receiving ability throughout camp and preseason games, he could wind up hijacking a large majority of the backfield workload. The 2018 Redskins featured Adrian Peterson as the ground-game workhorse, with Chris Thompson (when healthy) as the receiving threat. Having one player who can handle both of those roles could nullify the need to spell Guice on passing downs. Of course, the Redskins won't want to run Guice into the ground early on as he completes his comeback from a torn ACL, so there is still likely to be at least somewhat of a timeshare. But there is arguably no more valuable fantasy asset than a running back who receives the bulk of his team's rushing attempts and passing-game usage. Guice is piecing together the tools to find himself in that category.
