Welcome back to the Outfield Waiver Wire, where we look at the best outfielders available in at least 50 percent of Yahoo leagues. Consider this column your recommendations for Week 10 outfield waiver wire pickups.
We're getting a bit deeper into the season now, but there are still plenty of guys who can help you floating around on the waiver wire. Not every move can be a blockbuster. Value is value, wherever you can find it. This column is designed to help you do just that.
Let's get down to business.
Week 10 Outfield (OF) Waiver Wire Targets
Steven Souza, OF, Tampa Bay Rays (46% owned)
Souza roared out of the gate, but went cold after a torrid couple of weeks. Entering play on May 24, he’d hit just one home run in May. He went deep twice that night, and has hit .342/.444/.789 with five homers and 19 R+RBI since. Souza strikes out too much to be an asset in batting average – his current .266 mark is about the upper bound of what can reasonably be expected – but he’ll contribute everywhere else.
Domingo Santana, OF, Milwaukee Brewers (45%)
While his ownership rate has increased sharply over the last few days, Santana remains available in over half of leagues right now. Given his production over the last five weeks - .330/.413/.547 with six homers and 43 R+RBI – he deserves a spot on almost any roster. Four of those home runs have come in his last 11 games.
Whit Merrifield, 2B/0F, Kansas City Royals (28%)
Merrifield enjoyed some brief fantasy relevance as a rookie last season, and he’s done nothing but hit since the Royals demoted Raul Mondesi and re-installed Merrifield at second base. While he’s mostly hit in the bottom third of the order of a low-scoring lineup, the 28-year-old is hitting .293 with six stolen bases and, shockingly, six home runs. Merrifield added 25 pounds of muscle over the offseason thanks to a strict diet, which could be a factor. He’s also managed to substantially trim his strikeout rate at the same time.
Max Kepler, OF, Minnesota Twins (28%)
Kepler has been quietly solid in his second MLB season, slashing .272/.351/.467 with seven homers, 54 R+RBI, and three steals. Four of those bombs have come in the last two weeks. Lineup protection may or may not actually exist, but hitting behind Miguel Sano will definitely allow Kepler to continue getting plenty of RBI opportunities.
Shin-Soo Choo, OF, Texas Rangers (14%)
Choo’s days as a high-average hitter appear to be over, but he’s still providing some value to fantasy owners with seven homers, three steals, and 55 R+RBI this season. He’s even more attractive in OBP formats, since he remains one of the more disciplined hitters in baseball. As long as he can stay healthy, Choo is worth rostering in standard leagues.
