Ethan Grunkemeyer Officially Named Starter for Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer has officially been named the starter for the 2026 season, according to On3's Griffin McVeigh. Grunkemeyer followed new Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin from Penn State and will be the first QB1 of the Franklin era in Blacksburg. As a redshirt freshman last season, Grunkemeyer appeared in 11 games, including seven starts after a season-ending injury to Drew Allar. He completed 123 of his 178 passing attempts for 1,339 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions. He added one touchdown on the ground, though he's not much of a rushing threat. While the Hokies could exceed expectations in 2026, Grunkemeyer is unlikely to be a top producer at the QB spot, making him unappealing for college fantasy football. Virginia Tech kicks the season off with a Week 1 home stand against VMI.
