High-Confidence Strikeout Picks
All odds were current as of 8:00 AM
Spencer Strider OVER 6.5 strikeouts (+118 NOVIG)
Not many pitchers on this slate aside from Jacob Misiorowski have the strikeout upside of Spencer Strider. Strider has struck out eight or more batters in three of his previous five starts and is fresh off an eight-strikeout performance against the Cincinnati Reds. While he is giving up more earned runs than we are accustomed to, the strikeouts are still piling up.
This is thanks in large part to his 34.1% whiff rate, which ranks in the 94th percentile. Additionally, he has posted a magnificent 31.5% K rate, ranking him in the 95th percentile. The matchup against the Pirates today is also a juicy one.
Over the previous two weeks, Pittsburgh has been posting a 25.2% K rate versus right-handed pitchers, which ranks them fifth-worst in the league. While they are crushing the ball, as noted by their 126 wRC+ mark over that same span, the K rate should be high enough for Strider to get over his total once again in this matchup.
I also like the fact that Strider is pitching at home, where he has posted a 10.2 K/9 since 2024.

Joe Ryan OVER 6.5 strikeouts (+130 NOVIG)
I was not sure I was going to include Joe Ryan in this piece initially, but I cannot leave him out, given his recent success. Over his previous three starts, he has mowed down a whopping 27 batters. This encompasses 19 2/3 IP, and if we break it down even further, he has struck out a total of 39 batters across his previous 31 2/3 IP.
Quite frankly, he has been on a tear, and this shows up in the metrics. Overall, he is posting a 33% chase rate, which ranks in the 73rd percentile. Additionally, and as expected, his K rate of 28% ranks in the 86th percentile. He has had some ups and downs to be sure, but it is worth taking a flier on while he is running hot, especially against this Royals' lineup.
Over the previous two weeks, Kansas City has been posting a K rate of 23% versus right-handed pitching, which ranks eighth-worst in baseball over that span. Additionally, they are also posting just a wRC+ mark of 77, which ranks fourth-worst in baseball over the previous two weeks.
