ANALYSIS: Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson had a limited role during his rookie season. In 2024, the former 66th overall pick ran the ball just 63 times as he served as the clear backup to workhorse James Conner.
In this limited role, Benson showed potential as he posted a solid 4.6 YPC, racking up 291 yards and a touchdown. Through the air, Benson caught all six of his targets for 59 yards.
However, Benson appears poised to take a leap in his sophomore season. Throughout training camp, the coaching staff has spoken highly of Benson and credited him for his improvements. The coaching staff has expressed that the USC product will have a larger role this fall.
Despite this positive buzz, fantasy managers should look to take a cautious approach in Week 1. While the Cardinals will likely have a sizeable lead in this game facing the Saints, it is still unclear how large a role Benson will take on in the backfield. As a result, managers should continue to view Benson as a high-upside stash.
While he could eventually emerge as the "1B" to Conner in the backfield, it is best to take a wait-and-see approach for the season opener.
