Last Five Super Bowl Winners, Ranked

Patrick Mahomes - Fantasy Football Rankings, DFS Lineup Picks, NFL Injury News

Justin Carter ranks the last five Super Bowl winning teams. Which recent NFL champion team was the best?

Nothing's bigger than the Super Bowl. The most-watched sporting event in the country every single year, it's a huge event that caps off the NFL season and crowns the best team in the league.

But not all great teams are created equal. Some Super Bowl champion teams are just better constructed than others. It doesn't take anything away from the other teams, but, well... the Super Bowl XLVI champion New York Giants don't stack up with a team like the Super Bowl XX champion Chicago Bears.

Let's rank the winners of the past five Super Bowls and talk about why they rank where they do vs. the other recent Super Bowl champions, starting with the team ranked fifth out of the recent winners.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2025:

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (LV)

Tom Brady's final Super Bowl championship team might have been his worst championship team, but that doesn't mean the 2020 Bucs were a bad football team by any means. In Brady's first year with the club, the Bucs went 11-5, though it's worth noting that 10 of those wins were against teams that missed the postseason. The team made the playoffs as a wild card team, winning all its playoff games on the road. The Bucs had two All-Pro players, both on defense: linebackers Devin White and Lavonte David.

In Super Bowl LV, Tampa upset a Kansas City Chiefs team that went 14-2 and were the defending Super Bowl champions, blowing out KC 31-9. Brady threw for three touchdowns in the victory while the Tampa defense picked Patrick Mahomes off twice and kept Mahomes out of the end zone. It was the first time in Mahomes' NFL career that the Chiefs didn't score a touchdown.

4. New England Patriots (LIII)

This was the end of an era in New England as the Tom Brady and Bill Belichick duo won their final Super Bowl together, marking six wins for the duo. The team went 11-5, winning the AFC East for the 10th season in a row. All five of the team's losses were to teams that missed the postseason. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore and kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson made the All-Pro team.

In Super Bowl LIII, the Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta in the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever. Heading into the fourth quarter, the game was tied at 3-3 before a Sony Michel touchdown run provided the only end-zone trip of the day. It wasn't Brady's best Super Bowl, but it was enough to get it done. Julian Edelman was named Super Bowl MVP after catching 10 passes for 141 yards.

3. Los Angeles Rams (LVI)

After failing to get over the hump in Super Bowl LIII, the Rams made a big move a few years later, swapping quarterback Jared Goff for Matthew Stafford in a deal that worked out pretty well for both sides. Stafford helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl title in Sean McVay's fifth season on the sidelines, with three players — defensive tackle Aaron Donald, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, and cornerback Jalen Ramsey — making the All-Pro First Team.

In Super Bowl LVI, the Rams faced an upstart Cincinnati Bengals team, quarterbacked by Joe Burrow. Los Angeles came out ahead in the end by a 23-20 final score, with the Rams scoring the go-ahead touchdown with just 1:25 to play in the game on a one-yard reception by Kupp, completing a comeback from a seven-point third-quarter deficit. The Rams tied the record for most sacks in a Super Bowl with seven. Kupp was awarded the Super Bowl MVP award after catching eight passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns.

2. Kansas City Chiefs (LIV)

The Kansas City Chiefs have won two of the past five championships and those two teams represent the two best championship teams in that span, starting with the team's Super Bowl LIV champion team.

That Chiefs team went 12-4 in the regular season despite going 1-3 in their first four home games. Four Chiefs players made the All-Pro team that season, with Tyrann Mathieu on the First Team and Travis Kelce, Mitchell Schwartz, and Mecole Hardman on the Second Team.

After falling behind 24-0 to Houston in the Divisional Round against the Texans, the Chiefs hit the gas, coming back to win 51-31. They then beat the Titans in the AFC Championship before taking down the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV.

In that victory, quarterback Patrick Mahomes led his team back from a 20-10 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter, throwing touchdowns to Travis Kelce and Damien Williams. Williams went on to clinch the game with a late 38-yard touchdown run.

1. Kansas City Chiefs (LVII)

The Super Bowl LVII champion Chiefs better than the Super Bowl LIV champion Chiefs? Yep. Even with Tyreek Hill gone, the Chiefs offense looked as good as ever. Four offensive players made the All-Pro Team, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce making the First Team. Kansas City went 14-3, tied for the most wins in franchise history.

In Super Bowl LVII, the Chiefs took on the Philadelphia Eagles, winning a 38-35 shootout in Glendale, Arizona. Just like in their previous Super Bowl victory, the Chiefs had to make a late comeback, scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter, with Mahomes throwing touchdowns to Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore in that final frame.

Mahomes won his second Super Bowl MVP award, throwing for three touchdowns despite being limited to just 182 passing yards. The Chiefs didn't turn the ball over a single time in the victory.
