The Houston Astros have selected shortstop Brice Matthews with the 28th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. A Nebraska product, Matthews was ranked as the 57th-best draft prospect by MLB Pipeline, but the Astros evidently like what they see in the 21-year-old and perhaps could try to sign him below slot value. Matthews runs well and should play up the middle long-term, but it remains to be seen whether his future is at shortstop, second base, or center field. He was dominant offensively this past season, slashing .359/.481/.723 with 20 homers, 67 RBI, 47 walks, 53 strikeouts, and 20 stolen bases. His power and speed should translate nicely to pro ball.--Andersen Pickard - RotoBallerRead More News
