Week 5 Tight End (TE) Rankings Analysis

By Zach Wilkens (@LopsidedTrades)

Tyler Eifert faces the Seahawks but it’s actually not a terrible matchup. They give up the 10th most points to opposing tight ends, and that number could have been much higher if not for Jimmy Clausen in place of Jay Cutler in Week 3. With the Seahawks likely doing a great job of shutting down the WRs, Andy Dalton will have to look Eifert’s way more often. At TE7 I think Eifert is very startable.

I kind of hate myself for it, but I have two players in my top ten this week that really haven’t done much at all this season. Those two players are Owen Daniels (TE9) and Zach Ertz (TE10). Daniels has a touchdown each of the past two weeks, but he hasn’t had more than 28 yards on the season.

I hate relying on a guy so touchdown dependent, but he is agains the Raiders and they have been truly awful against tight ends this year. They’ve given up at least one TE touchdown in every game so far along with at least 80 yards. Daniels seems like a pretty safe play.

As for Ertz, he also has a nice matchup vs Saints (3rd most points allowed to TEs), but he really hasn’t done anything all year. With three guys I would normally have ahead of Ertz on bye this week, I guess this is more a reflection of how little I like the rest of the options.

Looking for a deep flier at TE this week? Derek Carrier is your guy. Thrust into the starting role with Jordan Reed out, Carrier should see at least four or five targets this week. Carrier is a super athletic tight end the Redskins acquired from the 49ers in the preseason after Niles Paul went down for the season. Sure enough, Reed got hurt so we’ll get a chance to see what Carrier can do. He has five targets on the season so far, and caught four of them for 26 yards. That’s not exactly encouraging, but we are talking about a deep flier here.
