BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues
OWNED IN: 33% of leagues
ANALYSIS: When a player is involved in a platoon, it's often tough to consider them in mixed leagues as their production doesn't have the consistency owners look for. Gomes is in such a situation with his new team, but so far he's continued his success from Cleveland down to D.C. Through nine starts behind the dish, he's slashing .265/.306/.412 with a home run, three runs, and five runs batted in.
Last season with Cleveland, the 31-year-old backstop clubbed 14 homers, drove in 48, and scored 52 times. In a very thin position, Gomes was a very solid roster piece at catcher. Compare his 2018 slash line of .266/.313/.449 and he's on pace for another great year. However, splitting time with Kurt Suzuki now in Washington, it seems to have pushed some owners away.
While the numbers seem comparable, Gomes' batted ball metrics point to diminished power. His fly ball percentage is down to 27% from 41% in 2018, while an average launch angle of just 13% would also be his lowest since Statcast's inception in 2015. Although, a 32% Hard Hit % is in line with the past five years, which hints that the fly balls will come in due time. If you punted catcher at the draft, and Gomes stays healthy, he will be a solid boost to your lineup as the season moves on.
