Xavier Cedeno (RP, TB) - Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Add Immediately in All Leagues

OWNED IN: 6% Fleaflicker

ANALYSIS: Xavier Cedeno is a 29-year-old left-handed reliever with just two saves in 123.1 innings of work over his career. He began the season as a lefty specialist, but settled into a setup role early on with Brad Boxberger on the disabled list. Now, interim closer Alex Colome is temporarily sidelined with biceps tendinitis, and Cedeno is the most likely candidate to assume ninth-inning duties.

Through 25.1 innings pitched so far this year, Cedeno owns a 3.91 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP with 25 strikeouts. He has an above-average 23.4% strikeout rate, but has struggled with his command, posting an 8.4% walk rate. He has induced groundballs at a 48.6% clip, and his only two pitches — a cutter and a curveball — are both swing-and-miss offerings.

Besides the obvious risk that comes along with being a first-time closer, there are two concerns surrounding Cedeno’s fantasy appeal. First, the Rays have not had a save opportunity since June 14, with just a 2-11 record over that span. Secondly, Colome’s DL stint is retroactive to June 19, so there is a chance he returns as soon as he is eligible on July 4.

Regardless, Cedeno is a talented pitcher with good strikeout stuff and the potential to collect a few saves in the short-term. As a result, he is worth taking a flyer on in just about all leagues.
