Week 13 DraftKings Cheap Tournament Plays: Alex Smith, C.J. Anderson, David Johnson & More!

December is here and we're approaching that home stretch of football where we have plenty of data under our belts to work with. Of course now we can fall into the trap of drawing too much value from year long statistics that really aren't so accurate, as the team looked quite different in its first three games rather than the its most recent three games. Just keep that in mind as you make your calls.

The game with the highest projected point total from Vegas is the Carolina-New Orleans game with a 49.5 total. Other high total games are Philadelphia-New England (48.5), Indianapolis-Pittsburgh (47), and Atlanta-Tampa Bay (46).

There is still plenty of value calling far down on the player lists in DraftKings' player pool. We'll note the chalkier plays in the "other names" quick hit, but the full blurbs will be reserved for plays that require some context.

Week 13's Cheap DraftKings Quarterback DFS Plays

Alex Smith (QB, KC): $5,100 - @OAK

The Kansas City Chiefs have looked like a different football team lately. They have recovered and readjusted after the loss of Jamaal Charles. Now they have a committee of Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware, both of whom have shown themselves to be effective runners. Travis Kelce has a fantastic matchup here against the Raiders, who are notorious for not being that good at guarding tight ends. Alex Smith is not going to be someone DFS owners want to rely on in cash considering how little he might end up doing, but three out of the past four games he has put up over 20 points. He has rushed for over 30 yards in each of the past four games as well. Oakland has a good run defense, but gives up mileage in the passing game. Jeremy Maclin and Travis Kelce could be eating out there, with Alex Smith getting you 250-300 yards and two or three touchdowns on top of some nice rushing yards. He hasn't thrown a pick since Week 3. You can do a lot worse here with a shot at the cheap guys.

Jay Cutler (QB, CHI): $5,100 - vs. SF

It was extremely surprising to see San Francisco make a game out of their matchup with the Arizona Cardinals last week, and it makes this not as much of a layup as once thought. That said, the 49ers are still a matchup you want to attack. Jay Cutler has only thrown for one touchdown in his past two games, though one of those was against Denver to be fair. The game before Denver was his 35 point mauling of the Rams. The point here is that Cutler and the Bears are in a good spot at home against a 49ers team that still is a subpar defense. Alshon Jeffery isn't on the injury report for the first time since November 11th. Eddie Royal and Marquess Wilson both have missed practice this week, but Martellus Bennett has been a full participant and both Matt Forte and Jeremy Langford are there to bring a balanced rushing attack (and both of whom excel in the screen game). Cutler is a good tourney play here with a pretty safe floor for cash considerations as well.

Other cheap plays: Ryan Fitzpatrick, $5,200 @NYG, Ryan Tannehill, $5,300 vs. BAL, Matt Hasselbeck, $5,300 @PIT.

Week 13's Cheap DraftKings Running Back DFS Plays

C.J. Anderson (RB, DEN): $3,500 - @SD

C.J.'s performance last Sunday night against the Patriots might vault his ownership quite a bit, and also leave Ronnie Hillman (who is $1,000 more) massively underowned and a great GPP play. Regardless, Anderson at $3,500 against a Chargers defense that gets gashed by the run (and pretty much anything resembling forward movement) is a good play that DFS owners need to be aware of. The Broncos shouldn't need to open up the playbook that wildly here, and the ground game combined with their defense should be able to control this game for Denver. If you're a believer in momentum and want to roll the dice on Anderson being the one to capitalize most from the great matchup here, it's not going to cost you a lot of pesos here.

David Johnson (RB, ARI): $3,400 - @STL

Chris Johnson is done for the regular season. Andre Ellington is also sidelined with turf toe and hasn't been practicing this week. David Johnson is the starter here with no one else really pushing him for snaps. The Rams have a reputation for being pretty strong against the run, but lately they've been getting diced by opponents. The Cardinals' offense is also good enough where it isn't as though the Rams can stack the box and leave all of the Cardinals' receivers in one on one coverage. Johnson should have a good chance to flex his muscles in this matchup. At $3,400 a starting running back who should get 18 touches is a steal, and today Arians said how Johnson could get 25 touches. Fade if you'd like as ownership should be fairly high at this price, but don't let him slide by your awareness.

Other cheap plays that should have higher ownership: Alfred Morris, $3,700 vs. DAL, Duke Johnson, $3,800 vs. CIN, Shaun Draughn, $4,000 @CHI, Ronnie Hillman, $4,500 @SD.

Week 13's Cheap DraftKings Wide Receiver DFS Plays

Marvin Jones (WR, CIN): $3,800 - @CLE

Marvin Jones is usually the guy who gets forgotten in the Bengals offense, what with A.J. Green, Tyler Eifert, Giovani Bernard, and Jeremy Hill usually capturing the headlines. Marvin Jones is second on the team in targets with 72 (Green has 100, Eifert 66, for context's sake) and has a great matchup here against the lackluster Cleveland defense. Cleveland just lost to the Matt Schaub-led Ravens and made him look halfway decent. Jones has 8-80-1 games in him. If Eifert is out then Jones' stock goes way up. It's entirely possible that the Bengals running game and defense is enough to decimate the Browns and put the game away, but the matchup is great and for this price he is absolutely worth throwing on a tournament team.

Ted Ginn (WR, CAR): $3,600 - @NO

As of now Ron Rivera isn't committing one way or another in terms of Devin Funchess or Corey Brown starting opposite Ted Ginn. Now most people probably would rather flock to Funchess over Ginn, but Ginn is your typical great tournament type of player. The boom or bust who can top off a game with an 80 yard bomb. He has a quarterback that has a cannon for an arm and still has young enough legs where he can burn DBs down the sideline. This game is slated for plenty of points, with most of them coming from Carolina. The Saints defense is the brightest bullseye in the game right now, and Ginn appears to have the best tournament setup to benefit from this. At this price, it's really hard to fade Ginn completely given his potential.

DeVante Parker (WR, MIA): $3,300 - vs. BAL

This may very well go poorly. While Parker did step in last week once Rishard Matthews went down, Tannehill and the Dolphins were in catchup mode and garbage time pretty early. Tannehill ended up throwing it a season high 58 times against the Jets last week. Parker ended up seeing 10 targets in all, but all of those numbers should be pro rated for Tannehill's usual 35-40 passing attempts moving forward. Parker should still see 6-7 targets, and has been talked up going into this matchup. The Ravens are still good at stopping the run and are still getting beat by the pass, so the game does profile well for Parker and the passing game. At this price, taking a starting wide receiver in a matchup against the Ravens is a good idea.

Other cheap plays that should have higher ownership: Cecil Shorts, $3,600 @BUF, Doug Baldwin, $3,800 @MIN, Kendall Wright, $4,300 vs. JAC.

Week 13's Cheap DraftKings Tight End DFS Plays

Scott Chandler (TE, NE): $2,500 - vs. PHI

This is the chalk play since everyone is acutely aware of the Patriots' position without Rob Gronkowski this week. Yes, they should get Danny Amendola back, but Scott Chandler is now the only real big target that Tom Brady has out there. Many are crossing their fingers that this week is Brandon LaFell's breakout, but Chandler is the tall target out there that Brady can loft the ball up to and know that Chandler should either catch it or be able to knock it down before a defender can make a play on the ball. That reliability for Brady at minimum price for you, the DFS owner, makes for a solid combination. Now take all of this and combine with the fact that the Eagles are playing like garbage right now and just generally appear as though their spirit is broken, and you've got a great chance for a New England blow up game, of which Chandler should be involved in.

Owen Daniels (TE, DEN): $2,900 - @SD

San Diego is just gutted on defense, and Julius Thomas just had a great game against them. Now Denver doesn't need to utilize their tight end as much as Jacksonville did (especially after Allen Hurns went down), but Daniels might still be worth a shot in the dark considering no one will probably be rostering him. Last week against the Patriots, it seemed as though Daniels still is a shade ahead of Vernon Davis in the tight end pecking order for Denver. The Broncos seem to really like those intermediate routes that favor tight end usage (let alone that Gary Kubiak loves running offenses with tight ends being featured) so as to keep things relatively easy for Brock Osweiler as he feels things out in the NFL.

Will Tye (TE, NYG): $2,500 - vs. NYJ

This is for those that like to live dangerously, and maybe just stupidly. Tye has seen his targets increase in the past three weeks, working his way up from six, to seven, to eight targets in the Giants' most recent game against the Redskins. He had 74 yards receiving in that game as well. The Giants rushing attack is pretty much nonexistent this year, and that's against neutral opponents. The Jets have a good run defense and the Giants have a very low chance of getting anything going on the ground here. With Darrelle Revis out the Giants should be able to attack through the air. The Jets may pull a safety over towards Odell Beckham in order to bracket him and limit the Giants' best weapon. Combine this with the Jets' propensity to blitz and there could be plenty of plays where the middle of the field is pretty vacated and Tye is running out there in one on one coverage with a linebacker. It's not the worst hail mary play for minimum price.

Other cheap plays that should have higher ownership: Jacob Tamme, $3,700 vs. TB (Hankerson is out, bodes very well for Tamme), Kyle Rudolph, $3,700 vs. SEA, Julius Thomas, $4,000 @TEN.

Week 13's Cheap DraftKings Defense DFS Plays

Miami Dolphins, D/ST: $2,300 - vs. BAL

This one is pretty straight forward. You want the defense that is facing Matt Schaub and the depleted Ravens' offense. I know they just won against the Browns, but those were the Browns. While the Dolphins haven't looked great lately, they're still not the Browns. They were embarrassed by the Jets last week, but before that they had registered multiple sack games ever since they came out of their bye week. The pass rush is much improved and Schaub could be forced into an ill advised throw or five. This is what tourneys are all about.

Washington Redskins, D/ST: $2,300 vs. DAL

A home game for Washington against a Dallas team that just lost Tony Romo for the season? Sure, sign me up. The Redskins are also coming off of a pretty good showing against the Giants last week. Matt Cassel is not a good quarterback by NFL standards, Dez Bryant is playing at less than 100%, and they know their season is in the tank. The Redskins are playing for the NFC East title at this point and are trending upwards. These two teams are heading in completely different directions and their spirit while playing should reflect that. For $2,300 if you want to fade the owners bullying the Ravens, go for Washington and pick on Matt Cassel.
