One and Done Selections - U.S. Open

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Owen Vrabel, Matt Miller and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Joe Nicely - Xander Schauffele

Alternate - Mito Pereira

Getting cute is all fun and games until your guy is slamming a trunk come Friday afternoon. So while some will try to think outside of the box for this week’s U.S. Open, I’m gonna stay firmly inside the safe zone with a proven major championship performer in Xander Schauffele. The X-Man’s pedigree in majors - and the U.S. Open specifically - is well known, as his exploits in America’s national championship over recent years rival that of any player not named Brooks Koepka. The one thing missing from his pristine resume is a victory and I think there’s an excellent chance for him to break through that glass ceiling this week on a classical Brookline layout that should suit his game perfectly

Yearly Earnings - $6,000,238
Yearly Cuts Made - 16/21

Josh Bennett - Cameron Smith

Alternate - Patrick Cantlay

Based on some info I see through different channels, next to the LIV tour guys and Brooks Koepka, Cam is one of the least popular “stars” playing this week. Honestly, after I looked at the course I couldn’t think of a better venue to suit Cam. Hopefully I’m not missing something, but all signs point to Cam being a slam dunk this week. By many people’s accounts, this is going to be a race to even par, and if you look at the course it makes a ton of sense. The tee shots are not difficult, but there will be a premium put on good ball-striking and around the green play because of how small the greens are and how difficult the approaches to them will be. Cam is bad off the tee, that is no secret. However, that doesn’t appear to matter too much this week. He’s striking his irons very well, and we all know him to be one of the best short game players on Tour. So, what is there not to like here? His US Open history is not great, but other US Opens didn’t have green complexes this small that will demand short game greatness. This seems like such an obvious play to me and hoping the rest of the guys go elsewhere and I can get a big boost in the standings.

Spencer Aguiar - Sam Burns

Alternate - Dustin Johnson

We continue to try and back ourselves out of a corner with a reduced player pool that is running out of choices quicker than a tank of gas in today's economy. The five top options I have left from my model would be Will Zalatoris, Shane Lowry, John Rahm, Mito Pereira and Hideki Matsuyama, but I am going to throw what might be a slight curveball in Sam Burns - a golfer that will undoubtedly be popular as an outright but might not have the same appeal in OAD contests.

I can't necessarily talk anyone out of Zalatoris if that is the route they decide to go, but my ultimate reason for going in a different direction came down to the simple fact that I need to shoot for a win with our totals bunched together, and I thought Burns' upside gave me the best chance of striking gold at the U.S. Open. I liked Dustin Johnson for a similar reason -plus the fact that this might be the last time we see him this year - but give me the hottest player in the world not named Scottie Scheffler, and let's roll the dice.

Yearly Earnings - $6,967,599
Yearly Cuts Made - 19/21

Matt Miller - Jordan Spieth

Alternate - Joaquin Niemann

It's US Open week! The Country Club looks like it's going to be a brutal test for the players this week and it will take a great all-around performance to win. I'm going to go with Jordan Spieth this week and I truly believe he has all the tools to get it done.
Jordan has gained strokes off the tee and approach in nine of his last 10 starts. His previous struggles off the tee have now turned into somewhat of a strength (knock on wood), and he will need that to continue this week if he hopes to win. We also know Spieth has that magic around the greens. With the Country Club boasting the second smallest greens in the PGA Tour major venue rotation, there will be a lot of missed greens and scrambling around this week.
I think the ultimate question for the former US Open champ is whether or not he will be able to putt well enough to win. Spieth, who was once an elite putter on the PGA Tour, ranks 153rd on the year in strokes gained putting. He's looked shaky, to say the least standing over five footers and that won't fly this week. That being said, we have seen some signs of life from the putter lately. He's gained strokes putting in three of his last four starts including a showing in his last start at the Memorial where he gained five strokes putting. If he has figured it out on the greens again, he may just end the major drought on Sunday.

Yearly Earnings - $5,243,239
Yearly Cuts Made - 15/21

Andrew Putters - Brooks Koepka

Alternate - Tony Finau

This is going to be a hard test where pars matter. Being long and straight off the tee will help. Around the green play will be a bit minimized due to the level of difficulty that the high rough creates. I know Brooks and Tony have not had the greatest year so far, with Tony’s more recent form on the climb, but it’s Major SZN!!!! We Brooks is a “BIG GAME HUNTER” I see both players being competitive and having the tools to compete.

Yearly Earnings - $3,691,941
Yearly Cuts Made - 13/21

Owen Vrabel - Scottie Scheffler

Yearly Earnings - $7,319,360
Yearly Cuts Made - 17/21
