Will Vest Spotless in Second-Half Debut
Will Vest mowed down the Texas Rangers for his 16th save in a 2-1 win on Sunday. Making his first appearance in a week, the right-hander entered with the bases empty and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Vest fanned Wyatt Langford to end the frame and then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with another strikeout to take down Texas. He needed just nine pitches to record four outs. The 30-year-old lowered his ERA to 2.23 with a 0.99 WHIP and 50:15 K:BB in 44 1/3 innings. With fellow Tigers reliever Tommy Kahnle in the throes of a July meltdown (14 earned runs allowed in 3 1/3 innings), Vest has a firm hold on the closer's job.
