Tarik Skubal Has Electric Stuff
4 years agoDetroit Tigers left-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal skyrocketed up prospect lists in 2019 after racking up 179 strikeouts in 122 2/3 innings (13.1 K/9) in the minors, and he showed some of his electric stuff (94.4 average mph, 2,422 rpm average spin rate on his heater) in 2020. But the 24-year-old finished with a 5.63 ERA in eight outings (seven starts), while allowing 2.5 home runs per nine innings. The No. 24 overall prospect in baseball is overshadowed by Casey Mize in Detroit, but he struck out more than a better per inning and has one of the highest average velocities on his fastball among lefties. Skubal will need to improve his changeup against right-handers, but he should continue to rack up plenty of strikeouts and has plenty of upside in his left arm. The southpaw is worth a flier in the later rounds in deep mixed drafts.
