Paul Goldschmidt 2024 Player Outlook: Veteran Slowing Down But Is Set To Continue Performing
11 months agoPaul Goldschmidt is entering the final year of his contract and at 36 years old, you'd be excused for thinking he's over the hill. The numbers do not back that up. In 2023, the veteran first baseman played 154 games (687 plate appearances) and hit .268/.363/.447 with 25 homers, 80 RBI, 89 runs and 11 stolen bases. Although the homers, RBI and runs were the lowest Goldschmidt has tallied in a full season since 2016, he still ranked 47th among all hitters on the ESPN Player Rater. The consistent production is not to be sniffed at. It's fair to say the days of 30 homers and triple-digit RBI and runs look over. His .491 xSLG and .367 xwOBA (.350 wOBA) do suggest that he's capable of another 25-homer season, supported by his 25.5 xHR in 2023. Goldschmidt has been one of the most durable players for the last decade. Since 2015, he's missed a total of 44 games (an average of less than five games missed a season). While Goldschmidt has shown signs of slowing down, the numbers don't look like they'll fall off a cliff in 2024. If you draft him for a repeat of last year, you shouldn't be disappointed.
