7 days agoAs if the bad play in non-LIV events wasn't enough to have cause for concern about playing Jon Rahm (foot) in fantasy lineups, his recent withdrawal from the Saudi League's event in Houston with an infection in his left foot should. The Spaniard has still not secured a victory on his new circuit and has a T45 and a missed cut to his name in the year's first two majors. To say the move to the breakaway league has not been as fruitful as many suspected for Rahm is a massive understatement. With a $10,900 price tag on FanDuel, he is undoubtedly the riskiest play at the top of the board with little hope of getting a positive return for DFS players.Source: Data Golf

7 days agoCam Waters made his NASCAR Cup Series debut on Sunday at Sonoma. Although he was fresh off of winning the last Supercars race at Wanneroo Raceway last month and he also made a few starts in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series this year (which gave him a bit more experience than his fellow Supercars debutant Will Brown), Waters never really got a chance to compete, as he was taken out in the multi-car crash triggered when Josh Berry spun Christopher Bell into William Byron as he was attempting to re-enter the track. This crash broke Waters' suspension, and he eventually finished 35th. Although he had a fairly anonymous run even before his crash, he at least was not as embarrassing on track as Brown was.Source: Racing Reference
7 days agoMichael McDowell made a surprise charge to finish second on Sunday, giving him his best finish both at Sonoma and this year. His finish was improbable, as he was caught up in a crash in the grass with Austin Cindric and Noah Gragson, but McDowell's strategy was on point, while many other contenders made their final pit stops too early, forcing Chris Buescher to slow down to save fuel and causing Martin Truex Jr. to run out of fuel on the last lap, which elevated McDowell from fourth to second in the last five laps. However, his playoff chances are significantly worse than they were last year because the Indianapolis Road Course race he dominated last year was replaced by the oval, and the Watkins Glen race is now in the playoffs, which leaves Chicago and Daytona as his only realistic possibilities for regular-season wins, and those are both unlikely.Source: Racing Reference
7 days agoDenny Hamlin had a catastrophic engine failure while crossing the start-finish line to complete Lap 2 in Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma. The engine failure came without warning, snapped a five-race top-five streak for Hamlin, and cost him the points lead to eventual race winner Kyle Larson. Hamlin was relegated to a 38th-place finish, the first time he finished last in a race since last year's Charlotte Roval race, although he also finished last in the previous Sonoma race after a crash. Clearly road courses are Hamlin's biggest Achilles heel right now, as his second-place result at Watkins Glen last year has been his only top-10 road-course finish with the Next Gen car. With this year's playoffs having two road courses for the first time, Hamlin will need to work on this if he wants to finally win his first NASCAR Cup Series championship.Source: Racing Reference
7 days agoAlthough Christopher Bell was mostly a non-factor at Sonoma, he earned a quiet 10th-place finish and suffered less bad luck than any of his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates. This is not to say he had no bad luck, though, as Josh Berry spun him out on Lap 35 while trying to recover from sliding off the track. This triggered a domino effect that took out five other cars, but Bell was not significantly damaged. He worked his way up to 11th in the closing laps before being gifted a top-10 finish on the last lap when Kyle Busch got spun out by Ross Chastain, and Martin Truex Jr. ran out of fuel. This partially makes up for Bell's bad luck last week at Gateway and continues his current run of consistency, which has caused him to rise from 17th to ninth in the points standings in the last five races.Source: Racing Reference
7 days agoVeteran cornerback Steven Nelson officially announced his retirement from professional football over the weekend after helping the Houston Texans made the playoffs last year, when he was second in interceptions (four) and pass deflections (12) on the team. Nelson had an interception returned for a touchdown in the wild-card win over the Cleveland Browns. The 31-year-old was originally a third-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015 and he spent four seasons with the Chiefs before inking a three-year, $25 million deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played two seasons in Pittsburgh and then signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022. The former Oregon State defensive back finishes his NFL career with 13 interceptions, 78 passes defended and 456 tackles.Source: ESPN.com - DJ Bien-Aime
7 days agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Josh Lowe is sitting out the series finale against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. The Rays have been cautious with Lowe since he returned from the 10-day injured list on June 4 following his second oblique injury of the season. The 26-year-old has only played in three of the six games he has been back, which is certainly frustrating for fantasy owners. In those contests, he is 1-for-11 at the plate with five strikeouts. Despite the limited playing time, Lowe is definitely a hold in all formats. He just hit .292 with 20 home runs, 83 RBI, and 32 stolen bases one year ago, so things should get better for those who own the Rays outfielder.Source: MLB.com
7 days agoMiami Marlins second baseman Otto Lopez was activated from the paternity list on the team's off day on Monday. Lopez was placed on the paternity list on June 7, as he welcomed a new baby into the world. After spending the maximum three days away from the team, he will rejoin the Marlins ahead of their three-game set against the New York Mets beginning on Tuesday. The 25-year-old has been a surprise bat in Miami's lineup this season and currently owns a .295 batting average with three home runs and 18 RBI. He also has a current six-game hitting streak, which he'll try to extend on Tuesday. The young infielder should resume his everyday role at second base for the Marlins. Source: Miami Marlins
7 days agoThe Miami Marlins made a couple of roster moves on Monday's off day, which included optioning infielders Xavier Edwards and Tristan Gray. Both players were just called up on June 7, but with Tim Anderson (bereavement list) and Otto Lopez (paternity list) ready to return, the team decided to send them both down again. Edwards started all three games this past weekend against the Cleveland Guardians -- going 2-for-9 with one double -- while Gray went 0-for-2 with one strikeout in his two plate appearances. Both players are now headed back to Triple-A Jacksonville after spending the weekend with the Marlins.Source: Miami Marlins
7 days agoThe Pittsburgh Steelers signed head coach Mike Tomlin to an undisclosed three-year contract extension on Monday that takes him through the 2027 season, according to the team. The 52-year-old said in January that he expected to get an extension this offseason after some people were starting to question his future with the organization. Under Tomlin for the last 17 years, the Steelers have never had a losing season, which is already an NFL record. Tomlin has a 173-100-2 regular-season record and is 8-10 in the playoffs as the Steelers' head coach. This year, he'll have an interest situation to navigate at quarterback with veteran Russell Wilson and former first-rounder Justin Fields potentially creating some QB controversy.Source: ESPN.com
7 days agoMiami Marlins shortstop Tim Anderson was reinstated from the bereavement list on the team's off day on Monday. Anderson was placed on the bereavement list on June 7 and missed the Marlins' weekend series against the Cleveland Guardians. However, he will be back on the active roster for the team's three-game set against the New York Mets beginning on Tuesday. It's been a rough year for the 30-year-old so far in 2024, especially at the plate. The veteran shortstop is batting just .188 with three doubles and six RBI across 48 games this season. As a result, he should only be considered in extremely deep leagues moving forward.Source: Christina De Nicola
7 days agoGreen Bay Packers wide receiver Bo Melton has impressed head coach Matt LaFleur during offseason workouts, with LaFleur praising Melton's speed, run-blocking abilities, consistency and work ethic. Melton's speed was referred to as an "elite trait" that helped him go from the Seattle Seahawks' practice squad in 2023, to the Packers' practice squad, to going over 100 yards rushing in a Week 17 win. The 25-year-old also received 39 offensive snaps, including a 19-yard touchdown reception, in two postseason games. Melton had 16 catches on 24 targets for 218 yards and one touchdown in five regular-season games for Green Bay, but for now he's a bit buried on the receiver depth chart behind Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Jayden Reed. He'll be left to the waiver wire in most fantasy drafts, but he's a name to watch if the Packers suffer an injury or two at the position in 2024.Source: Wisconsins State Journal - Jason Wilde
7 days agoChicago Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga got back on track in the team's 4-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday afternoon. After the rookie gave up eight earned runs (12 total runs) with 15 hits over his last two outings, Imanaga delivered a strong performance in his 12th start of the year. The left-hander gave up just two runs on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts across 6 2/3 innings. That outing marked his seventh quality start of the season. The southpaw will carry a 1.96 ERA into his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Source: ESPN
7 days agoNow that tight end Darren Waller officially announced his retirement over the weekend, New York Giants tight ends Daniel Bellinger and rookie Theo Johnson are set to compete for primary pass-catching duties at the position in 2024. Johnson was a fourth-rounder this year, while Bellinger was a fourth-round selection in 2022. But tight ends are physical, but Bellinger has the clear experience edge, having caught 55 of 63 targets for 523 yards and two touchdowns in 29 games in his first two NFL seasons. However, Bellinger's production has left a lot to be desired in fantasy in terms of upside, leaving the door open for Johnson to impress and earn more work as his rookie campaign rolls on this fall. In a suspect Giants offense with a quarterback coming off a torn ACL last year, neither Bellinger nor Johnson represent anything more than a low-end TE2 in fantasy.Source: NJ Advance Media - Darryl Slater
7 days agoTwo-time All-Pro return man and wide receiver Jakeem Grant Sr. will take part in the New York Jets' minicamp this week on a tryout basis, according to a source. Grant is attempting to make a comeback of sorts after missing each of the last two years due to injury. He suffered a torn Achilles in training camp in 2022 and a season-ending knee injury in the preseason last year while with the Cleveland Browns. Grant was an All-Pro return man in 2021, though, with the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins, and he could give the Jets some veteran experience on special teams in 2024 if they sign him. The former sixth-round pick of the Dolphins in 2016 out of Texas Tech has never made much of an impact on offense in his seven NFL campaigns, posting a career-high 36 receptions in 2020 for 373 yards and only one touchdown in 14 games (four starts).Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero
7 days agoMilwaukee Brewers pitching prospect Robert Gasser (elbow) is debating whether to have season-ending surgery on his UCL, which he said is not "broken" but also "not as strong as it should be." The 25-year-old southpaw received two other opinions, and it was initially believed the injury was to the flexor tendon in his forearm. One doctor recommended surgery, and the other recommended rest and rehab, which is why Gasser is scheduled for a third opinion from Dr. Keith Meister. As well as missing the rest of 2024 if he has surgery, Gasser would also most likely miss half of the 2025 campaign. The team's No. 4 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, is worth stashing in dynasty/keeper leagues, even if he has the surgery. Before getting hurt, he went 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with 16 strikeouts in 28 innings over his first five MLB starts for the Brew Crew.Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Curt Hogg
7 days agoBoston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (rib cage), who suffered torn cartilage in his left rib cage on April 20, has made significant progress but hasn't been cleared to swing a bat. Casas threw and took ground balls on Saturday, though, according to manager Alex Cora. "We have to be patient. Everything is trending in the right direction. I really don't know when he's going to start swinging, but just keep doing the things in the gym and taking ground balls," Cora said. "Hopefully that step is soon, but that's going to take a while. It's not easy [to know] because it's just about feel. We'll see." The 24-year-old said last week that he hoped to resume swinging last week, but that hasn't happened yet. The lefty-hitting first baseman is hoping to return around July 1, but that could be pushed back a bit. Either way, his power upside makes him a worthy stash in all fantasy leagues.Source: MLB.com
7 days agoBoston Red Sox second baseman Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) hit indoors on Saturday, according to manager Alex Cora. Grissom missed the first 32 games of the season with a left-hamstring strain and then injured his right hamstring running out a grounder to third base on June 1. An MRI exam on the right-handed hitter showed a mild strain of his right hamstring. "We need to make sure that we're addressing what is pulling on the hamstring or whatever potentially is underlying and contributing to the hamstring injuries. But we'll kind of work to rehab him and get him on the field as soon as we can," chiefs baseball officer Craig Breslow said. It's good news that the 23-year-old's newest hammy injury isn't serious, but fantasy managers are quickly losing patience. With Romy Gonzalez (hamstring) also out, Enmanuel Valdez is seeing most of the playing time at the keystone in Boston.Source: MLB.com
7 days agoBoston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu (ankle) sprinted outside on Saturday, according to manager Alex Cora, who said on Sunday that Abreu is "feeling a lot better," and his recovery is "moving faster than everybody predicted." Abreu saw a foot specialist, and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said that nothing was revealed beyond the initial diagnosis of a sprain. The 24-year-old suffered the injury stumbling on the dugout steps on June 2 and sprained his right ankle. Before going on the injured list, Abreu was one of the best all-around hitters on the team, slashing .272/.344/.485 with six home runs, 14 doubles and 22 RBI while playing great defense in right field. Regression is expected for Abreu in the second half of the season, but fantasy managers in all formats should continue to ride him until that happens.Source: MLB.com
7 days agoThe main event of UFC Louisville featured a back-and-forth battle between Jared Cannonier and Nassourdine Imavov where Imavov scored a controversial fourth-round TKO. Imavov landed a big punch that hurt Cannonier but he managed to recover quickly. Unfortunately for Cannonier, the referee decided to stop the fight. Most of the fans and experts thought that the stoppage was way too early. At 16:34 of action, Cannonier landed a takedown and 64 significant strikes. We just might see these two run it back again, hopefully without controversy the next time they fight. With the loss, Cannonier's MMA record drops to 17-7.Source: UFC
7 days agoBoston Red Sox infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez (hamstring) hit indoors on Saturday, and manager Alex Cora said on Sunday that the hope is Gonzalez will start a minor-league rehab assignment on June 11 with Triple-A Worcester. Gonzalez returned from his first stint on the injured list due to a left-wrist sprain on May 8, but he's back on the IL with a hammy issue. Cora said he doesn't expect Gonzalez to be out "that long." In just 35 at-bats this year for Boston, the 27-year-old is hitting .257 with six RBI. With Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) also on the shelf for Boston, Gonzalez could see some playing time at the keystone in Beantown if he makes it back before Grissom. Enmanuel Valdez is another option at second base.Source: MLB.com
7 days agoNassourdine Imavov scored the biggest win of his career but not without controversy. He managed to defeat the former title challenger, Jared Cannonier, by a TKO, when he landed a big punch on Cannonier, wobbling Cannonier. It looked like Cannonier recovered but the referee decided to stop the fight. In 16:34 of action, Imavov landed two takedowns and 82 significant strikes. With this win, Imavov may have punched his ticket to the top five of the UFC's middleweight division.Source: UFC
7 days agoBrunno Ferreira made a statement on the UFC's middleweight division, knocking out Dustin Stoltzfus at UFC Louisville on Saturday. After a brief brawl, Ferreira stepped back and delivered a devastating spinning back elbow to Stoltzfus, securing a TKO victory in the first round. In 4:51 of action, Ferreira landed 24 significant strikes. 31-year-old Ferreira improved his record to 11-1 and secured his second victory in a row. Source: UFC
7 days agoBoston Red Sox outfielder/designated hitter Masataka Yoshida (thumb) started a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Saturday and went 1-for-4 as the DH. He was set to DH again on Sunday for another four at-bats, according to manager Alex Cora. The skipper also said that the hope is Yoshida will be able to rejoin the team at some point the week of June 10, but likely not before Wednesday, June 13. He had been taking live batting practice and hit off a Trajekt machine on Thursday. Yoshida has been on the injured list since April 29 with a left-thumb sprain but could rejoin Boston's starting lineup later this week. The 30-year-old went 0-for-3 with a run scored and a walk on Sunday. When Yoshida returns to Beantown, he'll be the team's primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching.Source: MLB.com
