5 days agoThe Washington Nationals recalled rookie infielder Trey Lipscomb from Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday and placed first baseman/outfielder Joey Gallo (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list with a left-hamstring strain in a corresponding move. Lipscomb, the team's No. 16 prospect per MLB Pipeline, made his big-league debut earlier this year and went 27-for-107 (.252) with a homer, a double, nine RBI, 10 stolen bases and 16 runs scored in 33 games in D.C. The former third-round selection in 2022 out of Tennessee was hitting .247 (23-for-93) with no home runs, eight RBI and two steals in 24 games for Rochester and won't bring a ton of offensive upside for fantasy managers in NL-only leagues, aside from his speed. With Gallo on the shelf, expect Lipscomb to share some playing time at first base with Joey Meneses.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MASN Sports - Mark Zuckerman

5 days agoThe Washington Nationals placed outfielder/first baseman Joey Gallo (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with a left-hamstring strain and recalled rookie infielder Trey Lipscomb from Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move. Gallo departed Tuesday's win over the Detroit Tigers with the hamstring strain and will now miss at least the next 10 days. Given Gallo's reputation as a slow healer, fantasy managers will probably want to expect him to need more than the 10 days to recover. With the 30-year-old left-handed power hitter on the shelf, both Lipscomb and Joey Meneses will be options at first base for the Nationals. It's become harder to justify taking the huge batting average hit with Gallo for his power in fantasy leagues. He's currently slashing .164/.285/.321 with only five home runs and 11 RBI in 140 at-bats in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MASN Sports - Mark Zuckerman

5 days agoSan Francisco Giants manager Bob Melvin said that right-hander Jordan Hicks (illness) was sick on Tuesday during his start against the visiting Houston Astros, which is why he came out of the game at 72 pitches and his velocity was down a bit. Hicks said he has had IVs in him the last few days and has been dealing with flu-like symptoms. In his 4 2/3 innings of work on Tuesday, the 27-year-old allowed three earned runs on five hits while walking one and striking out five while taking his third loss of the season. It's unclear if he'll be able to make his next turn in the starting rotation, which is lined up to come next Monday against the Chicago Cubs. In his first year as a starter in San Francisco, the former third-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2015 has been great for fantasy managers, going 4-3 with a 3.01 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 64 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings over 14 starts.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: San Francisco Chronicle - Shayna Rubin
Share:
5 days agoSan Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt said that outfielder Jurickson Profar (knee) is dealing with a sore left knee after leaving Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Oakland Athletics mid at-bat after swinging and missing. Shildt indicated it's something Profar has been dealing with for a while, and he's currently considered day-to-day. Profar's left leg buckled after swinging and missing in the seventh inning, but the 31-year-old appears to have avoided a serious injury. It's pretty safe to say he won't be in the lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the A's, and fantasy managers shouldn't rule out a trip to the injured list eventually. If Profar misses more than just a few days, veteran outfielder David Peralta would likely be in line to play left field for the Friars against right-handed pitchers. Profar went 1-for-2 with two RBI and has been one of the best hitters in baseball so far in 2024, hitting .324 with 10 homers and 45 RBI.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - AJ Cassavell

5 days agoMilwaukee Brewers infielder Joey Ortiz (hamstring) is out of the starting lineup again on Wednesday as the team takes on the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. Although he doesn't think his right-hamstring injury is very serious, he'll head to the bench for the second straight game. With Ortiz out again, rookie Oliver Dunn is getting the start at the hot corner and is batting eighth against Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt. In his first 40 big-league games in 2024, Dunn is hitting .226 (21-for-93) with only one homer, seven RBI and three steals. He'll be a low-upside deep DFS sleeper on Wednesday. Ortiz, meanwhile, has looked pretty good in his first year with the Brew Crew, as he's currently slashing .285/.378/.465 with an .843 OPS, five home runs, 23 RBI and four stolen bases in his first 59 games played. Check back later this week to see if Ortiz is feeling good enough to return to the lineup.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

5 days agoChicago White Sox pitching prospect Noah Schultz started the 2024 season with High-A Winston-Salem, posting a 3.95 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and 42:7 K:BB in 27 1/3 innings. Following a start on May 18, he was promoted to Double-A Birmingham. Since then, he's been impeccable. Through 11 2/3 innings, he's allowed just five hits, one run, and no walks. He's also collected 14 strikeouts. Between High-A and Double-A, Schultz has a 3.00 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, and 56:7 K:BB in 39 innings. Notably, he hasn't thrown more than four innings in a start this season. Preferring to err on the side of caution and limit the 20-year-old lefty's workload, the White Sox aren't expected to promote Schultz to the big leagues until 2026.--Wade Smith - RotoBallerSource: Baseball Reference

5 days agoMiami Marlins shortstop prospect Javier Sanoja has been a hitting machine at Triple-A Jacksonville, with at least one hit in 16 of his last 18 games and nine multi-hit games in that time frame. In 42 games with Jacksonville this season, the Venezuelan is hitting .317 with two home runs and four stolen bases. Since his promotion to Triple-A, the versatile infielder/outfielder has been on a tear. Sanoja is the No. 17 prospect in the Marlins system and is just 21 years old. The fact that he is at Triple-A at such a young age shows that the Marlins are high on him. He doesn't have much power in his profile but is a plus-hitter who provides help in the other hitting categories. A call-up might not be in the immediate cards, but he is someone to keep an eye on in dynasty leagues.--Brian BuckeySource: MILB.com

5 days agoDetroit Tigers prospect Jace Jung went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI for the Toledo Mud Hens on Tuesday night. Jung hit his 10th and 11th home runs of the season, bringing his RBI total to 40. He is sporting a slash line of .285/.399/.536. The Tigers No. 3 prospect is doing everything he can to prove worthy of a promotion to Detroit. The brother of Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung, the younger Jace, should force his way to the big leagues at some point in 2024. He has the bat to be a valuable waiver-wire addition for the rest of the season. Jung is a must-have in dynasty leagues because the sweet-swinging lefty can do a bit of everything at the plate.--Brian BuckeySource: Minor League Baseball

5 days agoSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas put together a good performance in Tuesday's no-decision versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mikolas earned his eighth quality start of the season with seven scoreless frames of one-hit ball. He also allowed a walk and struck out six on the evening. Mikolas started the season getting hit hard, but he come along lately with five quality starts over his last six starts. Mikolas doesn't rack up enough strikeouts to be a must-roster, but with the way he is pitching lately, he is worth a look as a backend starter or streamer. Next up for Mikolas will be a date with the rival Chicago Cubs on Sunday.--Daniel Burdeen - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

5 days agoLos Angeles Angels outfielder Taylor Ward went 2-for-2 with a walk, double, home run and two RBI in Tuesday's loss versus the Arizona Diamondbacks. His home run would cut the Diamondbacks lead to two at the time, but it wouldn't be enough for the Angels to make a comeback. Despite the strong performance for Ward, he left the game early with lower back tightness and was replaced by outfielder Mickey Moniak in the top of the eighth inning. More should be known on Ward's status ahead of Wednesday's contest, but he can be considered day-to-day until more is known. On the year, Ward is now hitting .253 with 12 homers and 36 RBI. When healthy, Ward makes for a useful outfielder in all formats. Should Ward miss any time, Moniak would see more at-bats, but he can be left on the waiver wire for now.--Daniel Burdeen - RotoBallerSource: Rhett Bollinger

5 days agoOakland Athletics prospect Jacob Wilson (knee) was placed on the injured list by the Las Vegas Aviators on May 18 with an undisclosed knee injury. It remains unclear when Wilson will return from the injured list. The shortstop played 28 games at Triple-A this season, hitting .438 with three home runs and 22 RBI. The 22-year-old has shown elite bat-to-ball skills, making him an enticing prospect and allowing him to rise to the No. 1 overall prospect status in Oakland's organization. He has shown that he is a pure hitter, and if the power develops a bit more, he could be a big-time fantasy contributor in the future at the shortstop position. In a short sample size at Las Vegas this year, he demonstrated what he can do in a best-case scenario. A late-season call-up would make him noteworthy in the fantasy landscape. If not, a 2025 major league debut is likely if he returns to full health.--Brian BuckeySource: MILB.com

5 days agoLos Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman put together a big performance in Tuesday's victory versus the Texas Rangers. The slugger went 3-for-4 on the evening with three runs and a solo home run. Freeman was one of five Dodgers to go yard in a 15-2 routing of the defending World Series champs. On the season, Freeman is now hitting .297 with nine homers, 41 RBI and three stolen bases. At age 34, Freeman has shown no issues of slowing down and hitting behind Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani may be the spot in any lineup in baseball. The veteran remains one of the safest and most consistent option at the first base position moving forward.--Daniel Burdeen - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com
Share:
5 days agoArizona Diamondbacks shortstop prospect Jordan Lawlar (thumb) wasted little time in his return from the injured list. In his 2024 debut with Triple-A Reno, the talented shortstop homered, doubled, and drove in three runs, coming up a triple short of hitting for the cycle. He was reinstated from the 60-day injured list on Tuesday after being on the shelf all season with a torn ligament in his right thumb. Lawlar is the No. 8 overall prospect in baseball and the top-ranked shortstop prospect. Splitting time between Double-A and Triple-A last season, the 21-year-old showed off his power-speed potential with 20 home runs and 36 stolen bases to go with aa.874 OPS. An elite prospect, Lawlar should force his way to the Diamondbacks' big-league roster this season. Not many players are ahead of him on the stash list for minor leaguers, as he should be an impact waiver wire add when he gets the call to the show.--Brian BuckeySource: MLB Pipeline
Share:
5 days agoLos Angeles Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez continued his strong season with another home run in Tuesday's victory versus the Texas Rangers. Hernandez went 1-for-3 with a walk and two-run homer on the evening. The home run would be his 17th of the year to go along with his 50th RBI and a solid .266 batting average. The 31-year-old was a huge bargain for the Dodgers this offseason as he signed a one-year contract. Hernandez hit a career-high 32 homers in 2021 with the Toronto Blue Jays and he could surpass that with the way he his hitting this season. Entrenched in the No. 5 spot of the order, Hernandez remains a great option for managers moving forward.--Daniel Burdeen - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com
