Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene (groin) delivered an encouraging performance in a rehab start in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on Wednesday. Greene, who's working back from a strained right groin, tossed two scoreless, no-hit innings with four strikeouts against one walk. The 25-year-old threw 28 pitches (16 strikes), and should climb to the Triple-A level for a start on July 29 if he gets through the next handful of days unscathed. Greene has been on the 15-day IL twice this year with groin issues and hasn't pitched since June 3. When healthy, though, Greene has been spectacular. He owns a 2.72 ERA with a 0.97 WHIP and 73:14 K:BB across 59 2/3 innings.--Connor ByrneSource: MiLB.com

Boston Red Sox infielder Marcelo Mayer (wrist) exited the team's game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday with right-wrist discomfort, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Mayer scored on a Romy Gonzalez grand slam in the top of the fifth inning, but the team then replaced him at third base with Abraham Toro. Mayer went 0-for-1 with a walk on Wednesday before departing. The 22-year-old rookie has hit .228/.272/.402 with four homers, 10 RBI, and 20 runs scored in his first 136 major league plate appearances. The Red Sox are off on Thursday, so Mayer may not miss any time if the injury is minor. UPDATE: Mayer was wearing a brace on his right wrist after the game and said he will undergo an MRI exam. “It’s in pain but hopefully it’s not too severe,” he said.--Connor ByrneSource: Chris Cotillo - MassLive.com

Los Angeles Dodgers two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani will make his next start as a pitcher on July 30 against the Cincinnati Reds, manager Dave Roberts said. The Dodgers are hoping to get a season-high four innings from the right-hander, who continues a gradual buildup in his return to pitching from 2023 Tommy John surgery. The flamethrowing Ohtani has recorded a brilliant 1.50 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP and 13:3 K:BB over six short starts and 12 innings. He totaled three frames in each of his previous two outings. As a hitter, Ohtani has continued to dazzle. The 31-year-old is on a five-game home run streak, giving him an NL-high 37 over 465 plate appearances. Ohtani is also slashing a tremendous .273/.377/.620 with 70 RBI, a league-leading 97 runs scored, and 13 stolen bases.--Connor ByrneSource: Sonja Chen - MLB.com

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts (personal) could miss their next game on Friday against the Boston Red Sox for personal reasons, manager Dave Roberts announced. "There might be some things going on that he might not be around, that he's got to deal with personally," Roberts told reporters. "Everything is okay with him, but yeah, we'll see." Fantasy managers will want to keep an eye on Betts' status leading up to Friday and the rest of the Dodgers' weekend road series against his former team. Miguel Rojas has been the Dodgers' primary fill-in at shortstop this year when Betts hasn't played.--Connor ByrneSource: Sonja Chen - MLB.com

St. Louis Cardinals Lars Nootbaar (ribs) has been on the injured list with a left costochondral sprain (ribcage) since July 13. Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said Monday that Nootbaar has been unable to swing a bat without feeling discomfort in his left ribcage. Until the rib pain subsides, there is no clear timetable for his return. This type of injury is similar to an oblique strain, as little progress could be made until the pain leaves. Nootbaar had been an everyday outfielder for the Cardinals until his injury, compiling 12 home runs, 37 RBI, and four stolen bases to go along with a .227 batting average. Fantasy managers in leagues with an open IL spot should continue to stash Nootbaar for now.--Dr. Reuven GuySource: MB.com

St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Nolan Gorman (back) is on the injured list with lower back pain. According to Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak, Gorman had an injection for his lower back pain and could be ready to return when first eligible on July 29. His return should be based on how he responds to this injection. The injection should help relieve his lower back pain and inflammation, and allow Gorman the mobility to play. It is not known whether a rehab assignment will be needed. The power-hitting second baseman has logged an OPS this year of .718 and a wRC+ of 102. Gorman has averaged 20 home runs over the last three seasons. Fantasy managers with an IL spot in deep leagues can continue to stash Gorman.--Dr. Reuven GuySource: mlb.com

The St. Louis Cardinals designated right-hander Erick Fedde for assignment on Wednesday and recalled right-hander Andre Granillo from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. For now, rookie Michael McGreevy will replace Fedde in St. Louis' rotation and make another start this weekend on Sunday against the San Diego Padres. Fedde gets the boot off St. Louis' roster after surrendering 26 runs with 11 walks and only eight strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings over his last five starts. He just was not effective enough in going 3-10 with a 5.22 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 63 strikeouts in 101 2/3 innings of work over his 20 starts. McGreevy doesn't have overpowering stuff and only has a 6.1 K/9 in 51 1/3 innings in the last two years, but he has held a 2.81 ERA in nine MLB outings (seven starts) dating back to last year.--Keith HernandezSource: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Derrick Goold

Baltimore Orioles left-hander Keegan Akin (shoulder) began his rehab assignment at the rookie-level Florida Complex League on Monday. He is expected to have a few rehab outings before being activated from the injured list. His rehab assignment has now been moved to Triple-A Norfolk as he continues to work his way back from left shoulder inflammation. Before his injury, the lefty owned a 3.32 ERA with 38 strikeouts over 39 innings and could see an expanded role if the Orioles are sellers at the trade deadline. Baltimore could activate Akin soon to showcase him before the MLB trade deadline next Thursday.--Dr. Reuven GuySource: @masnRoch

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider said today that Daulton Varsho (hamstring) is moving his rehab to Triple-A Buffalo by Friday and is expected to remain there through the weekend. Barring any setbacks, he could be activated from the injured list early next week. Varsho has played in four rehab games so far and has homered in his last two contests. Before landing on the injured list, the 29-year-old slashed .207/.240/.543 with eight home runs and a stolen base this season. Coming back from a hamstring issue could put into question how aggressive he will be on the basepaths when he comes back. Fantasy managers in deep-leagues can continue to stash Varsho as he's close to returning from the injured list.--Dr. Reuven GuySource: @KeeganMatheson

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin (elbow) is on the 60-day injured list with right elbow soreness. Although his MRI showed that his UCL was intact, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Gonsolin was still not throwing, and the Dodgers would have to decide on his status "soon." The right-hander had Tommy John surgery in September 2023, and he experienced right elbow discomfort following his start this year on June 5. Gonsolin has only pitched 36 innings this year and was ineffective, posting a 5.00 ERA with a 1.42 WHIP and a 4.50 BB:9. Pitch control is usually the last pitching aspect pitchers get back after Tommy John surgery. The way his status is being discussed, Gonsolin's return this year is in doubt.--Dr. Reuven GuySource: @dodgerblue1958

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Ben Casparius (calf) said that his MRI exam came back negative on Wednesday and that he expects to avoid a trip to the injured list after dealing with right-calf cramping in his outing on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins, per MLB.com's Sonja Chen. It's good news, but Casparius will likely need a few days off before he's available for the Dodgers again. He was wearing a sleeve over his calf on Wednesday and walking with a bit of a limp. The 26-year-old former fifth-rounder in 2021 out of Connecticut has made 30 appearances (three starts) for the Blue this year in his second season in the big leagues and has posted a bloated 5.06 ERA (3.44 FIP) with a 1.28 WHIP, 60 strikeouts and 16 walks in 64 innings. Although his strikeout rate sits at just 22%, he's made strides in the control department with just a 5.9% walk rate.--Keith HernandezSource: MLB.com - Sonja Chen

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Roki Sasaki (shoulder) had a bullpen session on Wednesday and is set to have another session this weekend. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sasaki could head to the team’s spring training complex next week to face live hitters. He has been on the injured list with a shoulder impingement since mid-May and has topped out at 90 mph during previous recent bullpen sessions. Sasaki has only pitched in 8 games this year to the tune of a 4.72 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, and a 6.29 K:9. Based on his recent progress, Sasaki could return from the IL by late August.--Dr. Reuven GuySource: @sonjamchen
