Michael Kopech 2020 Outlook: Big Arm Returning From Injury
4 years agoUPDATE: Michael Kopech has oped out of the 2020 season. The wait may be finally over. After missing all of 2019 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, Michael Kopech should be ready to return to action in April or May. It’s possible his return could look something similar to what A.J. Puk did for Oakland last year, although fantasy owners will hope to see Kopech’s arm strength built up more quickly to help out in the starting rotation for the quickly-retooling White Sox. Before getting hurt, this young pitcher showed triple-digit fastball velocity and an outstanding breaking ball. But his control was also a step behind where Puk’s was when they both got hurt. Because he’s a two-pitch pitcher with iffy control, there was some reliever risk with Kopech even before his injury. We don’t think he’ll end up as a reliever and see No. 2 or 3 starter potential but it could take a little while for him to shake off the rust and reach his full potential.
