Devin Williams' Struggles Continue in Loss
Devin Williams (3-5) suffered his fifth loss of the season in a 5-3 decision against the Houston Astros on Friday. The Yankees called Williams in to pitch the top of the 10th inning in a 2-2 game, but manager Aaron Boone's decision proved costly. The right-hander quickly uncorked a wild pitch, enabling automatic runner Jose Altuve to move from second to third, before giving up an RBI single to Carlos Correa. Williams retired the next two hitters, but he surrendered a two-run homer to Taylor Trammell to put the game out of reach. While Williams finished the frame with a strikeout, it went down as the latest horrid outing for him. The former shutdown closer has now coughed up at least one earned run (nine total) in a shocking five consecutive appearances, increasing his ERA to a sky-high 5.73 in 44 innings. Williams does have a team-high 17 saves this season, but the playoff-contending Yankees probably have no choice but to demote him to low-leverage situations at this point. David Bednar, who didn't pitch Friday after throwing 42 pitches on Wednesday, seems like the logical pick to take over as the Yankees' closer down the stretch.
