Merrill Kelly Can't Keep Phillies In Check In Game 2
1 year agoArizona Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly faced the daunting task of trying to slow down the red-hot Philadelphia Phillies offense in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series on Tuesday night on the road in an extremely hostile environment. Kelly ended up taking the loss after allowing four earned runs on three hits (all home runs) while walking three and striking out six in 5 2/3 innings. The long ball killed the 35-year-old in this one, beginning with Trea Turner's solo shot in the first inning. The Phillies never looked back from there. It wasn't a terrible outing by any means, though, and Kelly has been pretty decent in his two playoff starts this year, posting a 3.00 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 11 strikeouts in 12 innings. The D-backs are going to have to make a comeback in the series if Kelly wants to pitch again in 2023.
