The Green Bay Packers are expected to hire former Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin to their offensive staff. Philbin worked under current Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy for the Packers as offensive coordinator from 2007-2011. Although McCarthy runs the offense and calls the plays, Philbin was at least partly responsible for the dominant Green Bay offense in 2011 that led the NFL in points. Philbin was later hired by the Dolphins where he had a short and disappointing tenure as head coach. Most recently he served as Indianapolis' offensive line coach. It has not yet been announced what role Philbin will have in Green Bay, but it is expected that he will serve as offensive coordinator. The return of Philbin shouldn’t be taken as a sign that Green Bay’s offense will revert to its 2011 form. That team had a much better collection of skill position players then. Furthermore, McCarthy’s scheme was on the relatively cutting edge of NFL innovation in 2011, whereas today it is nearly ancient. Philbin is a solid hire, but there is no reason to think this will have any dramatic effect on Green Bay’s offense.--Tyger McGuigganRead More News
