Jake Cronenworth 2022 Player Outlook: A Solid Contributor With Multiple Positional Eligibility
3 years agoSan Diego Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth followed up a strong rookie campaign by slashing .266/.340/.460 with 21 home runs, 71 RBI, 94 runs scored, and four stolen bases over 638 plate appearances in 2021. Although he hit 20 long balls, his xSLG dipped from .538 in 2020.446 in 2021; his power numbers could drop in 2022. The 27-year-old has excellent plate discipline with an 8.6 BB% versus a 14 K% and gets a boost in fantasy value as he is eligible at three different positions between first, second, and shortstop. A good comparison of Cronenworth's fantasy upside would be 2019's version of New York Mets infielder Jeff McNeil (.318/.384/.534 slash line). He is a consistent producer and has demonstrated his ability to work the count and get on base, evidenced by his career .343 on-base percentage. Cronenworth should play every day as San Diego's top utility infielder and hit third between superstar Fernando Tatis and All-Star Manny Machado. Steamer projects the Padres utility infielder to slash .269/.343/.430 with 16 home runs, 71 RBI, 78 runs scored, and six stolen bases, making him more valuable in OBP formats than standard rotisserie leagues. Cronenworth's Steamer projection makes him roughly fair value at his current NFBC ADP of 119. He should provide fantasy managers solid counting stats with multiple position versatility in 2022.
