Carlos Hyde 2021 Outlook: Just a Warm Body, But Might Be Needed
3 years agoAt this point in Carlos Hyde's career, he's just a guy there to take carries if needed. Hyde is the quintessential replacement level plodder. At age 31, even if he finds his way into volume, he's not going to wow anyone anymore. Hyde is on his fifth team in four years (technically fourth since one of his previous teams was already Jacksonville) as he just gets bounced around in the same role every season. Previously, Hyde's been the backup. This season, he's third-string. With the Jaguars drafting Travis Etienne, he and James Robinson will share the bulk of the snaps. Barring injury to one of them (and honestly, probably just Robinson), Hyde will be lucky to see much more than a 10% snap share. Hyde might be worth drafting in very deep leagues, but otherwise, he's just a name to keep in mind in case Robinson gets hurt. I don't even think an Etienne injury will do much for Hyde's workload. As we saw last season, they're content with feeding Robinson as much as he can handle if it comes to it.
8/26/21 Update: With news of Etienne's season ending foot injury, Hyde is suddenly far more interesting than previously thought. Robinson won't see the level of volume he saw as a rookie and Urban Meyer has an affinity for his former Ohio State boy, Hyde. The wily veteran also has low RB2 upside as the clear beneficiary to a potential JRob injury. Hyde went from undraftable to a viable RB4 with injury-based upside.
