Brandon Lowe Sitting Against Southpaw
5 months agoTampa Bay Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe will get the day off in the Bronx on Saturday versus the division-rival New York Yankees with left-hander Nestor Cortes on the mound. Curtis Mead, who was called up from Triple-A Durham on Saturday, will serve as the designated hitter and bat in the three-hole against Cortes. Even though it's a lefty-on-lefty matchup, Lowe has hit .571 with a 1.714 OPS, a home run and five RBI off Cortes in seven career at-bats, but Tampa obviously thought it was a good day to get Lowe a breather in the second game of the first half. Mead, who hits from the right side, has gone just 19-for-87 (.218) this year with a homer and five RBI in 26 games. Lowe only has 30 at-bats against southpaws in 2024 but has 11 hits (two homers) against them.
