AJ Smith-Shawver To Make First MLB Start This Weekend
2 years agoAtlanta Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos confirmed on Tuesday that rookie right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver will start on either Friday or Saturday against the Washington Nationals. The 20-year-old prospect, ranked the team's No. 4 prospect by MLB Pipeline, made his big-league debut with 2 1/3 innings of shutout and hitless baseball in relief against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. Smith-Shawver was extremely impressive at Triple-A Gwinnett, posting a 1.09 ERA, 45 strikeouts and 12 walks over seven starts (33 innings) to earn the call-up to the majors in the first place. He will slide into Michael Soroka's rotation spot for the time being and is definitely worth a look at least as a streamer in deeper leagues this weekend at home against the Nats.
