MLB Injury Updates for Fantasy Baseball: Springer, Stroman and More

Hello and welcome again to the MLB player injury report. If you learned one thing this week as a fantasy baseball manager, it was probably that bruises don't just hurt the players that they sideline.

If you are reading this, you are most likely biting your nails, pulling your hair out, or considering balling up in a corner in disbelief and frustration. Injuries are an unfortunate part of sports, but hopefully news you read here today will bring you a little comfort or at least help you to make a sound decision for your roster going forward.

To be clear, due to the fact that the amount of players battling injury is virtually endless, I will be focusing on players with the most clear relevance to fantasy baseball managers and those with the most recent updates.

Recently Returned From Injury

Yasiel Puig
David Wright
Michael Pineda
Mark Teixeira

Recent MLB Injuries

George Springer: George Springer thankfully went through a full pregame workout on August 25th and is looking to begin his rehab assignment this weekend. Expect Springer to be back soon.

Marcus Stroman: Marcus Stroman is set to pitch his second simulated game tomorrow. Stroman is looking to return to Toronto soon but it looks like he will have a bullpen role upon his return.

Randal Grichuk: Randal Grichuk has yet to resume any baseball activity since he hit the DL. There is currently no timetable for his return.

Jorge Soler: Jorge Soler hit the 15-day DL for a left oblique strain and currently has no timetable for return. Look into renting one of the platoon outfielders for the Cubs.

Brandon Crawford: Brandon Crawford is experiencing some tightness in his left side and is most likely going to be out the next few games for rest. It should be nothing too serious thankfully.

Matt Duffy: Matt Duffy sprained his ankle but was able to finish the game and later an x-ray came back clean for Duffy. Expect Duffy back in the lineup after probably a day of rest.

Joe Panik: After seeing a back specialist in Arizona, Joe Panik has recovered enough to take swings off of a tee on August 25th and to field ground balls on the 26th. Panik should begin a more concrete path back soon, and is hoping for an early September return.

Howie Kendrick: Howie Kendrick is recovering from his left hamstring strain a little sooner than expected. Kendrick could begin a rehab assignment this week and is shooting for a return at the very end of August.

Carlos Carrasco: Carlos Carrasco has been battling right shoulder soreness, but his MRI came back clean. After some time to rest and recover, Carrasco should be back in early September.

Jose Fernandez: Jose Fernandez really wants to make it back by the end of the season from his right bicep strain, and is throwing a bullpen session on August 27th. Fernandez is making a good recovery, but there are question marks on whether the Marlins will rush back their ace of the present and future.

Giancarlo Stanton: Giancarlo Stanton just began hitting off a pitching machine and then live pitching. Fantasy baseball managers can most likely pencil Stanton's return in for early September.

Lucas Duda: Lucas Duda hit the 15-day DL with a back strain. After rest and recovery, the Mets have set a return goal for Duda at September 6th. All we can do now is wait.

Steven Matz: Steven Matz is most likely going to return from his partial lat tear in early September and was sent to Double-A for a rehab assignment on the 24th.

J.j. Hardy: J.J. Hardy hit the 15-day DL for a groin strain. He is most likely going to return in early September and is set to receive a PRP injection on the 27th.

Wil Myers: Wil Myers took 40 swings with his bat at normal intensity. He hopes to return to the field after being sidelined with wrist surgery, but the jury is still out.

Maikel Franco: Maikel Franco could return in late September from his wrist fracture but his return doesn't look that promising. Cross your fingers.

Steven Souza Jr.: Steven Souza Jr. is yet another rookie victim of wrist fractures. Unfortunately, he is also most likely going to follow in Franco's footsteps. Souza could make a possible return at the very end of the season.

Billy Hamilton: Billy Hamilton has yet to resume baseball activity after hitting the DL for a shoulder capsule sprain. Await further updates on Hamilton as he has no current timetable.

Alex Gordon: Alex Gordon began a Triple-A rehab assignment and should be back very very soon. It may be time to cut ties with those Royals fill-in outfielders.

Anibal Sanchez: Anibal Sanchez is sidelines with rotator cuff inflammation and is set to begin throwing in early September. He probably has a few more starts left in him.

Jacoby Ellsbury: Jacoby Ellsbury is day to day with hip swelling but he should be returning any day now.

CC Sabathia: CC Sabathia hit the 15-day DL with right knee inflammation. A return this season is possible but the Yankees have a lot of young arms and CC's body has been slowly failing him. Don't set your playoff hopes on streaming the former Cy Young winner.
