ANALYSIS: Washington Commanders rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt has been one of the biggest risers in terms of fantasy stock in the preseason. After opening training camp as the depth option coming in as a seventh-round pick, Croskey-Merritt now finds himself in the mix for a starting role.
Earlier in August, the Commanders opted to trade their presumed starter, Brian Robinson Jr., to the San Francisco 49ers. While the teams also have a veteran in Austin Ekeler, who figures to have a significant role in the passing game, Croskey-Merritt appears to be in the mix to open the campaign as the lead running back.
In their final preseason contest, the Arizona product was rested alongside several key starters, including quarterback Jayden Daniels. Instead, No. 3 running back Chris Rodriguez Jr.was given the start, which further suggests Croskey-Merritt has surpassed him in the depth chart.
While the rookie will lose much work in the passing game to Ekeler, given that he appears to be viewed as the lead option in the committee, he is worth starting in all 12+ team leagues as a low-end RB2 in all leagues facing the New York Giants.
His touches could be tough to trust, but playing on a high-octane offense should present him with ample scoring opportunities.
