ANALYSIS: Less than a week after his promotion to Triple-A, right-handed pitching prospect Emmet Sheehan will debut at the major-league level for the Los Angeles Dodgers, per Juan Toribio of MLB.com.
He did not make a start for Triple-A Oklahoma this year but has pitched lights-out this season for Double-A Tulsa. In 12 starts, he went 4-1 with a 1.86 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and a 41.7% strikeout rate. He's coming off an especially impressive May, with a 0.36 ERA and 43.6% strikeout rate in 24-and-two-thirds innings pitched.
While he is off to an incredible start, his 91.1% left-on-base rate and 3.21 FIP indicate that there may be slight regression. Nevertheless, his 41.7% strikeout rate shows that Sheehan was dominant regardless of outside luck.
The 6-foot-5 Sheehan pumps a fastball that has blossomed into one of the best fastballs in the minors. In his final college season, his fastball sat in the low-90s, but it now sits at 94-97 and tops out at 99 mph.
He pairs that fastball with an impressive low-80s diving changeup. His third pitch is a less effective slider, but scouts believe it can become a solid pitch in the future.
The 23-year-old's first start will be against a San Francisco Giants team that ranks ninth in OPS and runs scored. It will be a tough matchup, but it is a good indicator of Sheehan's major-league staying potential.
With both Julio Urias and Noah Syndergaard on the 15-day injured list and not expected back within the next week, Sheehan could get a run of starts with the Dodgers to show whether he will stay long-term. If he continues this season's minor-league success at the major-league level, he should have the edge over Syndergaard and Michael Grove for the last spot in the Dodgers rotation.
While it is an aggressive call-up, the move shows confidence in Sheehan's ability as a pro pitcher. With a high ceiling as a starting pitcher, fantasy players in all leagues should look for Sheehan on the waiver wires.
