The NASCAR Cup Series held the qualifying session for Sunday's Grant Park 220 at the Chicago Street Course on Sunday afternoon after the scheduled practice session. This qualifying session consisted of two rounds, with the top 5 fastest drivers from the two groups in round one advancing to round two.
The five fastest drivers that advanced out of group one in round one were: Daniel Suarez, Kyle Larson, Tyler Reddick, Jenson Button, and AJ Allmendinger. The five fastest drivers that advanced out of group two in round one were: Denny Hamlin, Shane Van Gisbergen, Christopher Bell, Michael McDowell, and Joey Logano.
Several drivers had issues during qualifying as well. Chase Elliott wrecked during his attempt, and while he officially qualified 26th, he will have to start from the rear of the field for going to a backup car. William Byron will also have to start from the rear, as he sustained damage during qualifying and the team had to fix it. Kevin Harvick also crashed in qualifying, while Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. and Justin Haley didn't even post a lap in qualifying because of their wrecks in practice.
