ANALYSIS: It was Abner Uribe, not Joel Payamps or Trevor Megill, who pitched the ninth inning on Friday for the Brewers' first game of the season at Citi Field against the Mets. Uribe picked up the save for the Brew Crew, retiring all three of the batters he faced. It took just 11 pitches to get through the inning, with the flame-throwing righty tossing eight of the pitches for strikes.

He followed that performance up with another save on Saturday in a 7-6 win over the Mets. This one didn't go quite as smoothly with Uribe allowing a solo HR to Pete Alonso, however, he got the other three batters he faced out, including two of them on strikeouts.
Uribe was fantastic for Milwaukee last season, pitching 30 2/3 innings while posting a 1.76 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts. His bugaboo is the walk. The 23-year-old walked 20 batters in 2023 which was a BB% of 15.7%. He had a 99th percentile average fastball velocity too which frequently touched triple digits, but with that velocity came six wild pitches. This spring was more of the same, with the righty pitching eight-and-a-third IP with nine strikeouts, but also three walks, two hit-batsmen, and one wild pitch.
Payamps and Megill both pitched Friday but Uribe got the save nod, and with Uribe getting handed the ball again Saturday, it appears that he's the arm to own for save chances while Devin Williams is out. Williams is not expected to return until around mid-season, so this could be a superb opportunity for Uribe to take the reigns as the intermediate closer. With the type of stuff he has and pitching for a competitive Milwaukee club, he should be added in all formats.
