Browns quarterback (QB) Baker Mayfield is a fantasy football waiver wire pickup to target as a free agent addition for Week 14 of the 2020 NFL season.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 2QB Leagues
ROSTERED: 38% of Leagues
ANALYSIS: As incredible as it sounds, Baker Mayfield has avoided getting picked in the past five games he's played for the Browns. That is absolutely great news considering he was intercepted seven times in his first seven games, and although he fumbled once this past Sunday he could still do enough to finish with his second-best game fantasy score of the season to the tune of 29.5 FP.
Getting Mayfield for free throw the WW is a great strategy worth going for. Of course, Baker is always going to be a risky and volatile play, but his upside is quite high. And it is not that Baker has been horrid this season. Sure, he stringed three games of <10 FP from W8 to W11, and finished below 10 FP in four of the six games he played in the W6-W11 span. But he also averaged 14.6 FP through the first five weeks of the season and has put up back-to-back 18+ FP performances, topping at 29.5 this past weekend.
The W13 game against Tennessee saw Mayfield throw for his season-highest yardage (334), the most completions (25), and the second-most TDs in a single game (4). And although it was just a curiosity, he also caught a pass himself for six yards and a first down. If you haven't watched it, please go do it right now.
If you are part of shallow, 1QB leagues, you can pretty much pass on Mayfield. The Browns face the 8th- and 6th-best defenses against fantasy QBs in W14 and W15, which doesn't bode too well for the Brown. The matchup in W16 championship Sunday is great against the Jets (3rd-worst), but you have to make it there first and odds are Baker won't do it by himself. If you play in super deep or 2QB leagues, though, Mayfield is one of the fewest viable QBs you can still roster for free in almost two of each three Yahoo leagues. You can definitely do much worse than getting Baker, and who knows if he'll cook Baltimore and the Giants the next couple of weeks.
