Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler is nearing a three-year contract extension, sources said Wednesday. However, the deal will not have a clause preventing him from being exposed in the expansion draft for the Seattle franchise. He posted 10 goals and 34 points in 2018-19, and he ended up with four goals and 17 power-play points. His goals, points and power-play point totals were his most since the 2011-12. He remains a decent rearguard for his offense, but he is especially useful in the hits (127) and blocked shots (166) categories.--Daniel Dobish
